2026 Match Recap: FC Tulsa 1, Sacramento Republic FC 0

A midweek matchup in the middle of the Western Conference table was in the cards tonight as Sacramento squared off against FC Tulsa. And it would be Tulsa taking all three points in this contest thanks to a moment of magic from Jamie Webber to decide the match.

This is a make-up match for the game that would've been played on the 4th of July. But that game had to be postponed due to some inclement weather. This match will be a real 6 pointer in the Western Conference standings as both Tulsa and Sacramento were tied on points heading into this match. For Tulsa, they are coming into this match on a rest advantage having not played since last Wednesday. In their last match they won the championship rematch as they downed the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1-0. 

Sacramento would be looking to capitalize on their momentum after last weekend. They have a short turnaround but a steamrolling victory over Sporting JAX will be fueling the side heading into a tough matchweek. Tyler Wolff stole all the headlines as he notched a hat trick last time out. But keep an eye on Memo Rodriguez to continue his form as well as he added three assists to his tally. Lee Desmond and Jared Timmer were rewarded for their efforts as both came away with goals too. Sacramento has seen Tulsa already this season as they won 2-0 on the opening matchday of the season. Freddy Kleeman and Kyle Edwards were the scorers in that match. But that was back in March, which feels like a lifetime away at this point as both of these teams have evolved heading into the postseason push.

Collins opted to keep things mostly the same after the Republic's blowout win against Jacksonville. The only change to the starting lineup was slotting Danny Crisostomo in for Pep Casas. 

The Republic had the first chance of the night in the opening minute. Memo Rodriguez floated in a cross that got to the opposite post where Lee Desmond was lurking. He was first to the ball and his headed effort forced an early save from Dane Jacomen.

Jack Gurr was looking to create the opening goal in the 8th minute as he sprung a ball forward for Tyler Wolff. Wolff who was looking to continue his form from last match kept his shot low but Dane Jacomen came forward to smother the opportunity.

The first half progressed as a slow tempo as both sides were locked into a physical contest to hold possession of the ball. There were a couple of opportunities from both sides but nothing to trouble the keepers. Both sides were trying to generate opportunities and putting balls into the opposing box but each defense remained stout in turning away those chances.

Danny Vitiello was called into action in the 41st minute as Logan Dorsey got some space in the Republic box. He spun on the ball but his shot was fired close enough to Vitiello for him to catch it.

Coach Collins was forced into an early substitution in the 42nd minute. Mark-Anthony Kaye was forced off the field after a collision that ended with him landing awkwardly. Aaron Essel came on to step in to his place.

At halftime, neither side found a breakthrough in this one. It was a fairly even contest in the first half as both Sacramento and Tulsa were finding it difficult to get past the other's defense and really test the keepers. Sacramento was trying to stretch the backline with some long balls as Tyler Wolff was trying to receive the ball as he ran past the defense. Tulsa was doing a good job at limiting the impact of the Republic's playmakers. At the tempo this game is being played at, there may be only one goal in this matchup, if that. If either side wants to claim all three points in this one, they might just need to convert one opportunity and that would be it.

Coach Collins made some changes at halftime. Kyle Edwards and Tim Liebold came into this match to replace Tyler Wolff and Mayele Malango.

Sacramento was trying to speed up the pace of play and find some openings in the Tulsa defense. Jack Gurr was receiving more looks as he made runs down the right.

But it would be Tulsa to find an opening in the 66th minute to open the scoring. Tulsa won the ball off a turnover in the midfield and strung a couple of passes together to move towards Sacramento's box. Stefan Lukic floated a ball over the heads of the Republic defenders to find Jamie Webber running into the Republic's box unmarked. Webber brought the ball down and took a touch to open up the angle to get his shot past an onrushing Danny Vitiello.

Sacramento got another opportunity in the 75th minute. After building their way through the Tulsa press. The Republic made their way down the middle of the park with Kyle Edwards streaking into the Tulsa box. He wiggled himself away from his mark just enough to fire a low effort that deflected off the post and out.

Coach Collins made another attacking change to try and chase this match in the 79th minute. Forster Ajago had ten minutes to search for a goal as he stepped on to replace Blake Willey. Pep Casas would also be called on to replace Chibi Ukaegbu.

Tulsa nearly got a second goal in the 89th minute as Danny Vitiello had to step up to block a shot from Kalil El Medkhar.

Sacramento pushed to find a late equalizer but had nothing left in the gas as the final whistle blew. Just a tough match for the Republic to find a result in as nothing about the context worked in their favor. I did say after the Jacksonville match that I wanted to see how they performed against tougher opposition, and there's no better test than the defending conference champion. It was just a match where Tulsa dragged the tempo down to suit their style of play and they capitalized. We go from the league runner-up to the defending league champions as Sacramento continues with their road trip to Pittsburgh. Onwards!
