2026 Match Recap: Las Vegas Lights FC 1, Sacramento Republic FC 1

2026 Match Recap: Las Vegas Lights FC 1, Sacramento Republic FC 1

Sacramento had a showdown in the desert as they traveled out to Las Vegas to take on the Lights. And this match would end even as an early goal from Las Vegas saw the Lights up in the opening stages. But a shot from Forster Ajago that deflected off of Mark-Anthony Kaye was the equalizer for the Republic.

Similar to Phoenix, Las Vegas' results have been dismal to start this season. After a surprise season in 2024 that got them into the playoffs and gave the franchise some hope, the performances last season and to start this season are a return to the Las Vegas we know. But it isn't for a lack of effort. Their three defeats in the first five matches this season have ended in a scoreline of 2-3 to Colorado Springs, Tulsa, and El Paso. This team can put goals on you when they're healthy, and everything is clicking. But the questions come at the back as former Republic standout Jared Mazzola has a lot of activity in the net for the Lights. The Lights were tied for third in the league for goals conceded, giving up 10 goals already to start the season. Can this Las Vegas side tighten things up in the back and turn those goals scored for them into points?

Sacramento were looking to stoke the fires of their offense and continue their recent run of form. After there were some concerns about their attack to start this season, the Republic got a 4-0 win over Valley 559 in the Open Cup, followed by a 2-0 win against Phoenix. Blake Willey got his first professional goal in that last match against Phoenix, with Dominik Wanner adding to his tally to seal that match. And this attack will look to take advantage of a defense they scored 11 goals on across three matches last season. With a win here, Sacramento had an opportunity to jump to the top of the conference table, if paired with some other results in the league going their way.

Coach Devin Rensing had this lineup for Las Vegas:

Coach Neill Collins made this selection for Sacramento:

One chance in the lineup from the last match against Phoenix. Kyle Edwards would be leading the attacking line in place of Forster Ajago. Also, good to see Ryan Spaulding back in the lineup after missing a couple of matches due to injury.

The match started with a minute protest from the players as they are still in negotiations with the league.

The opening couple of minutes had a couple of chances that forced each keeper to react to some shots. But nothing on target to really trouble them so far.

And one of those half-chances was converted for Las Vegas in the 20th minute. Shawn Smart on the right flank passed it to Aaron Guillen a couple of yards outside the box. He eyed up his chance from distance and let it fly. The ball skipped off the grass and slipped through the hands of Danny Vitiello and into the back of the net.

Sacramento equalized with their first chance in the 30th minute. Mark-Anthony Kaye played a brilliant ball to play through Dominik Wanner, making a run down the left flank. Wanner put in a low cross into the Las Vegas box, where it reached Forster Ajago sitting in the middle. Ajago's shot bounced off of Kaye and into the back of the net, crediting Kaye for his first goal in a Republic uniform.

The sides were even at the break. Las Vegas opened the match early with a great effort from Guillen. Danny Vitiello will probably want that one back. But Sacramento was able to get on the board thanks to some great buildup play, and some might say a lucky deflection off of Kaye. Not a whole lot of other opportunities in this match, as there were only 3 shots on target between both teams, split two to one in favor of Las Vegas. The midfields for each team were doing their job of halting the opposing team's play. So, whoever can really take control of that section of that field and score that all-important next goal will be the objective for both sides.

Coach Collins opted to make a halftime substitution as Ryan Spaulding came onto the pitch for Mark-Anthony Kaye. Blake Willey dropped into the defensive midfield position for Kaye. This also moved Arturo Rodiruguez centrally as Ryan Spaulding moved to the outer flank.

The second half started with the same minute protest from the players.

The second half picked up where the first half left off. A lot of play in the midfield as both sides were trying to get past and really challenge the opposing defenses.

Coach Collins made a substitution in the 63rd minute. Kyle Edwards was called off to be replaced by Forster Ajago.

Coach Collins made more substitutions in the 69th minute as Chibi Ukaegbu and Mayele Malango stepped onto the pitch to replace Aaron Essel and Dominik Wanner.

Mayele Malango got a shot to take the lead in the 80th minute. He got into a sprint down the left flank and got into the Las Vegas box. Malango then cut back onto his right foot, but his low curling effort was blocked by Charlie Lanphier.

Another substitution was used in the 81st minute by Coach Collins as Brandon Cambridge took over for Arturo Rodriguez.

In stoppage time, Las Vegas got a look at the goal. Giorgio Probo swung in a corner kick into the Sacramento box. And Aaron Guillen rose above the mass of players to get a header. But his attempt was cleared off the line as Chibi Ukaegbu headed it away from the Republic box.

And the match ended all square between the two sides. Neither side really established dominance in this game, leading to a pretty meh performance. I came into this match expecting more, given the Republic's recent attacking form and Las Vegas's porous defense. But a point away from home is not a bad result. Curious to see how Neill Collins handles yet another busy week as they host Minnesota United in the Open Cup next. Onwards!

Key Takeaways:

  • Nothing really outstanding in this match. A 1-1 draw is a fair result, but this could've been a win if the Republic were up for it.
  • There weren't a whole lot of scoring opportunities in this one. You can say they were lucky to convert the one they did.
  • I need a Viva the Llama plushie. I love that goofy mascot.
