2026 Match Recap: Monterey Bay FC 1, Sacramento Republic FC 1

Sacramento started the final stretch of the season at Seaside as they visited their local rival Monterey. The home side scored right before halftime, but the first Republic goal from Cal Jennings equalized the match late for Sacramento.

It has been another rough season for Monterey. The last win for the Union came all the way back in June against El Paso. Since then, they have played in 9 matches across all competitions. And this stretch of games includes a six-game losing streak. This left Monterey with a hill to climb if they wanted to get back into the playoff spots, as they were well off the pace of the rest of the Western Conference heading into this one. The last match they played in resulted in a 1-3 loss against Rhode Island.

Coming off a draw against Phoenix, Sacramento was looking to get back into the win column. The Republic had a 2-0 lead in that match, thanks to some early goals from Tyler Wolff and Memo Rodriguez. But a goal just before halftime and a late equalizer saw the Republic drop points in a match that was in their hands at one point. The good news is that multiple goals were scored for the Republic. But some defensive miscues cost the team some valuable points in this race for the playoffs. These two sides have met previously this season. The first clash was early in March, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. And then in the USL Cup, it was a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation, but Sacramento came out on top via penalty shootout.

There were a couple of changes to the Republic attack from their last match against Phoenix. Forster Ajago would return to lead the line as he's not been called on in the past couple of matches. That would shift Tyler Wolff to the winger spot, taking the place of Mayele Malango. It is worth noting that the original lineup the Republic posted includes Mayele Malango. But that was taken down and replaced with the lineup that was actually used. 

It was an open match in the first couple of minutes of play, as both teams played at a fast tempo to take advantage of the available space. The first chance of the night came from Monterey in the 8th minute as a long ball got to Ilijah Paul streaking down the left flank. Paul beat his mark and put in a skipping cross to Fidel Barajas in the middle of the Republic's box. His redirected effort was stopped by a diving Danny Vitiello.

The first chance for the Republic came in the 37th minute. Memo Rodriguez swung in a corner kick that got punched out by Jacob Jackson. But the ball only got as far as Danny Crisostomo at the top of Monterey's box. Crisostomo took a touch to settle before rifling in a low ball that got deflected by a Monterey defender and hit the post before going out. The ensuing corner kick was headed on by Jared Timmer but handled by the Monterey defense.

Monterey opened the scoring in the 44th minute. Fidel Barajas and Sebastian Lletget put on a passing display on the right flank as they shifted the Republic defenders for a good spell. Barajas finally pulled the trigger on the cross and sent it across to the opposite side. Omari Glasgow was the target as he rose above his mark and headed the ball down into the ground and out of the reach of an outstretched Danny Vitiello.

And that goal would be the last real action before the half as Monterey held the advantage. Both teams were picking out their passes and had some opportunities. But it was Monterey that looked the more threatening side. Despite being level on shooting output, none of the Republic's chances were on target. Monterey were able to continuously test Danny Vitiello in the first half. And that was because their midfield was winning the battle in the middle of the park. Neither defense was able to stop the opposing attacks, and Sacramento paid for it right before halftime.

Sacramento was searching for an equalizer and struggling to find their way to Monterey's goal. That prompted Coach Collins to make a pair of substitutions in the 64th minute. Cal Jennings and Ryan Spaulding stepped onto the pitch to replace Forster Ajago and Tim Leibold.

There was a scuffle between the two sides that somehow resulted in no cards being shown for either team. Coach Collins was still looking for that equalizer as he made another pair of substitutions in the 72nd minute. Kyle Edwards and Alfredo Midence were asked to step in for Blake Willey and Tyler Wolff.

Sacramento was looking threatening in the final 10 minutes and finally found their equalizer in the 84th minute. Jack Gurr put in a long ball into the Monterey box that was headed back to the top by Memo Rodriguez. Kyle Edwards was the first to the scene as he took a touch and then swung an overhead kick that landed in front of Cal Jennings. And with the first shot on target, Cal Jennings beat Jacob Jackson and nodded it past the keeper to level the match.

Freddy Kleeman made his first appearance after recovering from injury, coming off the bench to replace Pep Casas in the 85th minute.

And neither team could find a late winner, as this match, like the other contests played between these two sides this season, ended in a draw. Two disappointing draws in a row for the Republic. First, the Phoenix match where they gave up a 2-0 lead. And now this one, where Sacramento really didn't find any advantage until late. The team looked bright with Kyle Edwards and Cal Jennings on the field, but what was happening the rest of the time? Only recording one shot on target, and that coming late in the match just isn't right. This should've been a contest where the Republic came away with three points. It's matches like these that we hope we don't look back on in October and November and think should've been a better result. The Republic heads further down the coast for the next contest as they visit Orange County. Onwards!

“I think I say the same every weekend. Every road game is tough in this league as proven with the results across our conference. I think Monterey Bay showed us a lot of respect tonight in terms of the way they approached the game. I think they were aggressive in some of the things that they tried to do, and I think that made it a much tighter game. Thought nil-nil at halftime would have been fair, and we lose a goal just before halftime, which definitely affected the run of the game in the second half. It felt very fractured again, but credit to the boys, they kept going.”

“And I thought in the last 15 minutes our substitutes had a big impact, and we obviously got the goal that I think we deserved. And really, a couple of balls around the box, we could have won it. It was a tough night, it's a point. We really wanted to get three, but we'll take it. We know that there's a lot of points still to play for, and I don't think we're far away from being able to turn some of these ties into wins. But we've just got to get a couple of the small details right.”

Cal Jennings on scoring his first goal for the Republic:

“I'm very thankful to score tonight. We never really know how long it'll take to open an account, but you’d like to believe it's as quick as possible. So happy to get on the score sheet, and it was a beautiful assist from Kyle… an overhead kick.”
