2026 Match Recap: New Mexico United 2, Sacramento Republic FC 3

The race for the postseason was heating up as Sacramento went on the road to visit a tough New Mexico side with playoff implications hanging in the balance. The Republic shot out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Memo Rodriguez. But New Mexico answered back. Kyle Edwards scored another goal off the bench that would become the difference maker. As another late goal from New Mexico wasn't enough to bring them back to level terms.

A team that Sacramento is trying to emulate in form towards the end of the regular season. New Mexico is the main contender to El Paso for the Western Conference lead heading into the postseason. That said, the team has drawn its last three matches against Indy Eleven, Birmingham, and Colorado Springs. That Birmingham match is particularly interesting, as New Mexico once held a 4-1 lead before conceding three goals to finish 4-4. So this team will be looking to get back into the win column and further their charge towards the top spot. New Mexico would be another team that has a keeper who can stand on his head at any given moment, as Kris Shakes is currently the league leader in saves. The last time these two sides met was in the summer, as New Mexico won 1-0 behind a late goal from Dayonn Harris.

Sacramento came into this match on a 7-game unbeaten run. But of those 7 games, only 2 of them were actual wins for the Republic, leaving a lot of points on the table. It has been an unfulfilling stretch of games as the Republic can put together a great performance and challenge their opponents, but the goal scoring isn't there to back them up and give them the results needed. This was evident in the last match against San Antonio, as Sacramento recorded 20 shots, 5 on target, but the match ended in a 0-0 draw. With limited opportunities left in the regular season, the Republic will need to make the most of them if they want a better seed in the postseason.

A couple of changes to the lineup for Neill Collins from the last match against San Antonio. Blake Willey got the start out wide in place of Mayele Malango, who is out on international duty. And Ryan Spaulding would start in the backline in place of Freddy Kleeman. 

Danny Vitiello was called on early as New Mexico had some promising attacks into Republic territory. The first chance came within the first minute of play as Valentin Noel thought to take a shot from distance that missed. Then, in the 7th minute, New Mexico launched a quick counterattack that led to Greg Hurst running onto the ball. Danny Vitiello stepped up to snuff the chance before a real shot was fired.

But Sacramento got a chance of their own early as a penalty was awarded in the 12th minute. Blake Willey got tripped up in New Mexico's box by Ousman Jabang. Memo Rodriguez stepped up to take the opportunity for the Republic. His attempt sent Kris Shakes the wrong way as it hit the back of the net.

New Mexico put another change on the Republic net in the 21st minute. Off a free kick opportunity down the right-hand side, Charlie Dennis played the free kick short to Niko Hamalainen at the top of the Republic box. The defender swung in a cross to Kipp Keller, who made a run at the far post, battling Lee Desmond for the ball. His sliding effort was blocked by Danny Vitiello, and that ended the sequence for New Mexico.

Both teams had chances to close the half, but nothing to trouble either keeper. Sacramento went into the half holding the advantage, thanks to a penalty conversion from Memo Rodriguez. Despite having the lead, New Mexico looked the more threatening side. They had better quality chances and tested Danny Vitiello and the Republic defense. But the Republic did well in the first half to stretch and halt New Mexico's advances, keeping them away from truly threatening positions. The Republic put a couple balls into the New Mexico box but couldn't generate clean opportunities from open play.

Sacramento opened the second half with another goal in the 48th minute. Jack Gurr broke through on the right flank and put a cross into the New Mexico box. Memo Rodriguez got his head on the cross, and his powerful header bounced into the ground and went over a diving Kris Shakes to give Sacramento the lead.

Coach Collins made a substitution in the 57th minute. Freddy Kleeman replaced Jared Timmer. Timmer went down with a knock in the first minute of play, but continued on with the match.

The Republic were still looking to build their lead in the 62nd minute. Jack Gurr and Blake Willey combined for a little give-and-go action that led to Willey running open into the middle of the New Mexico box. His effort on goal was blocked away by Kris Shakes.

Coach Collins made a trio of substitutions in the 67th minute. Tyler Wolff, Aaron Essel, and Kyle Edwards all stepped on the field to replace Alfredo Midence, Ryan Spaulding, and Cal Jennings.

New Mexico nearly found a way back into the match. United had a free kick that went into the wall, but Charlie Dennis was the first to the ball. He snuck his way past a couple of Republic defenders and played the ball forward to Ousman Jabang. Jabang was past the Republic defense, but his shot couldn't get past an outstretched Danny Vitiello.

But New Mexico kept pushing for a goal, and they got it in the 74th minute. The play built up in the middle of the park and reached Greg Hurst. A long ball was played in by Maliek Howell that got deflected to Greg Hurst at the top of the Republic box. It was just pure instinct from Hurst as he struck the ball before anyone could react, and he shot it nestled into the upper corner to give New Mexico a lifeline in this match.

New Mexico nearly found an equalizer in the 77th minute. Chris Gloster broke free down the left-hand side and put in a low cross into the Sacramento box. Justin Rennicks took the shot, and it was deflected by Lee Desmond. It went off the bar and was eventually cleared out.

Sacramento came the other way as Kyle Edwards sprung free past the New Mexico backline with the ball at his feet. He dribbled into the New Mexico box with just Kris Shakes to beat. Edwards finessed his shot to get it past the New Mexico keeper to restore the Sacramento lead to two goals.

New Mexico got another goal in the 85th minute. A long ball over the top played in by Chris Gloster got its way past all of the Republic's defenders. Luther Archimede ran onto the ball and hammered a shot past Danny Vitiello to get New Mexico back into this match.

Coach Collins made one more substitution in the 86th minute as Pep Casas was replaced by Arturo Rodriguez.

New Mexico were pushing to find an equalizer in stoppage time. Attempts from Luther Archimede and dangerous balls from the rest of the New Mexico midfield were all turned away. The Republic hung on for dear life as New Mexico mounted wave after wave of attacks.

And then the final whistle blew. Sacramento escaped New Mexico with all three points. A great result to start a three-game matchweek. And hopefully this builds momentum into the matches against Las Vegas and Tulsa. As it stands, the Republic are in a home playoff spot, but with how fluid this Western Conference is, that can change at any given moment. Next, the Republic host a Las Vegas Lights side trying to strengthen their own playoff chances. Onwards!

I'm so pleased for the players, they really deserved to take all three points, not just for tonight, but just for their work over the last couple of months. It's not always been rewarded, but you have to keep at it. So to come to one of the most difficult places on the road and put on the performance that we did was excellent. Obviously, the last 20 minutes made us more nervous than we would have liked. I thought up until about New Mexico's first goal, we really hadn't given them anything, and then a free kick that we just didn't manage to clear. We must have had three or four opportunities to clear it, but we didn't. And then with things 2-1 the game was back on. But we scored another. After that [New Mexico] just threw bodies forward and they made it hard. There's going to be games like that that are going to be difficult. But the boys did everything they needed to do to get three points in a really difficult environment.”

Kyle Edwards on becoming the all-time league leader for scoring goals as a substitute:

“I'm just happy that above everything else we got the three points. But the record is a very big accomplishment for me, and I'm very grateful for it. It's a great feeling. I think each and every one of us has a job to do, and obviously mine has been coming off the bench, with Sacramento and with my previous teams as well, and I've been doing a great job of that. Neill [Collins] saw that as an asset, and I'm still doing the same thing here. I think it shows that I'm very enthusiastic and very energetic off the bench so if that's what the team needs, I’m happy to do it.”
