2026 Match Recap: Orange County SC 1, Sacramento Republic FC 1

A clash of California's best, with playoff implications on the line, took place this past weekend as Sacramento traveled down to Orange County. The hosts, Orange County, scored first, but a late equalizer from Aaron Essel was enough to rescue a point for Sacramento.

For a good part of the season, Orange County was leading the Western Conference race. But their recent form has seen their pace slow down, and they have been overtaken by both El Paso and New Mexico. Winless in their last four matches, this includes a string of three losses to some of the best teams this year: a 0-3 loss to Tampa Bay, a 2-3 loss to Louisville, and a 1-5 loss to Tulsa. Orange County did have a bit of a bounceback in their last game against Oakland. But in that match, Oakland scored first before Yaniv Bazini snagged a point for Orange County.

At this point in the season, Sacramento has their fate in their own hands as to whether or not they will have a home playoff seed. Coming into this match, Sacramento had a 4-game unbeaten streak. But only one of those matches was a win for the Republic, beating Lexington. But after two disappointing draws against Phoenix and Monterey, the Republic will be itching to get back into the win column to try and propel themselves up a crowded Western Conference. Sacramento won the last matchup between these two with a late penalty kick that was converted by Michel Benitez, being the difference.

A couple of changes of note to the starting lineup from the last game against Monterey. Freddy Kleeman and Ryan Spaulding would be asked to start this match in place of Jack Gurr and Tim Leibold. Jack Gurr, interestingly, was left off the teamsheet entirely for this one. Cal Jennings would get his first start in the Republic colors, replacing Forster Ajago.

Both defensive units were tested early as each set had to deflect some threatening chances. Sacramento got some looks at goal thanks to some corner kick opportunities that bounced around in the Orange County box. The Republic weren't able to get a clean look at goal as the Orange County defense stood in their way and blocked the shots from testing Alexander Rando. And then on the opposite end, Orange County had some great buildup play to get into some threatening positions. They fired a couple of chances from within Sacramento's box. But the trio of Republic centerbacks also stood in the way to not give them a clean look at Danny Vitiello in net.

The first real chance came in the 22nd minute with Orange County on the break. Chris Hegardt worked his way down the left flank, maneuvering past a couple of Republic defenders. He played a pass through to Lyam MacKinnon, who made a run past the Republic backline. MacKinnon took a swing at the ball, but the shot was easily stopped by Danny Vitiello.

At halftime, neither side could really press the opposing defense. Both teams were organized defensively, and neither could find the space behind to really threaten goal. The best chance in the first half was from Lyam MacKinnon, but Danny Vitiello did enough to halt that chance. Sacramento didn't record a notable chance. Both teams will have to do better if they want to get a result out of this match.

Sacramento had some great buildup to start the second half that nearly gave them an opportunity. Memo Rodriguez floated a cross to the back post that was headed back across the goal by Pep Casas. Alex Rando was able to get a hand on the ball before Danny Crisostomo could get on the ball and fire a shot from point-blank range.

But Orange County found the opener in the 60th minute after a string of passes that got them from their backline to Ryan Doghman down the left flank. He took on his man and put in a low cross to Chris Hegardt looming in the Republic box. There wasn't a man to mark him as he took a strike on the ball and got it past Danny Vitiello.

In the aftermath of the goal, Neill Collins made a pair of substitutions. Alfredo Midence and Kyle Edwards stepped on to replace Blake Willey and Cal Jennings.

Another pair of subs was readied for the Republic in the 66th minute. Mayele Malango and Tim Leibold were asked to take the spots of Tyler Wolff and Ryan Spaulding.

For the second week in a row, Sacramento found themselves in a hole late, trying to find a way back into the match. Memo Rodriguez was doing his best to find opportunities, either setting up teammates or finding himself on the end of opportunistic passes. One of these chances came in the 80th minute after Memo Rodriguez played in a corner kick that was headed on by Lee Desmond. Alex Rando came up with a double save as Kyle Edwards contested the ball with a high boot that connected with the ball but was blocked immediately by Rando's body. Alfredo Midence got the rebound, but his shot was smothered by Rando.

The final substitution for the Republic was made in the 81st minute as Aaron Essel replaced Freddy Kleeman.

And Essel would make an immediate impact, scoring the equalizer in the 83rd minute. A laser of a corner kick from Memo Rodriguez was swung into the Orange County box. Aaron Essel ran onto the ball and tapped it home to get it past Alex Rando and equalize the match for the Republic.

Sacramento pushed on to try and find a late winner, but they couldn't convert on those chances. This match ended in a draw. On paper, a draw on the road against a team that's above you in the standings is not a bad result. But given where we are in the season and how this match was played, this could've been another positive result for the Republic. Sacramento has these opportunities to help themselves move up the standings, but they aren't making the most of them. Next up for the Republic is hosting Detroit. Onwards!

“I think the game unfolded the way we planned and prepared, and I think we had a lot of real positives but we're not capitalizing on them well enough. In the first half, we had some really good moments, and then out of nothing in the second half, we lose a goal, and I feel like that's happened in the last three games, where it's against the run of play. It was good that we were able to come back, but I felt that we left points on the table tonight. So in some respects we're not getting what we deserve, but then I think in other aspects we are because we're just letting ourselves down in some very small moments.”

Lee Desmond on how the game unfolded:

“It was just massively disappointing. I mean, we dominated the whole game, to be honest. And it just seems like that's the way it's gone for us. We're not doing a lot wrong at all, and just getting punished for it, and on the other end, can we go and score more goals? But with the last three weeks now, we feel like we've been the better team by a long shot, and dropped two points each week, so it kind of feels like a defeat, considering we feel like we dominated for the majority of the game.”
