2026 Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 1, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 1

2026 Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 1, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 1

Two teams jostling for playoff position squared off as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks visited the Republic. It took until early in the second half for the first goal, with the Switchbacks getting the initial blow. A late penalty for the Republic was converted by Kyle Edwards to equalize the match.

There would be a couple of familiar faces lining up for the Switchbacks for those who cheer for the Republic. Both Duka Lacroix and Matt Mahoney will be looking to make an appearance on the backline for Colorado Springs. But the attention-grabber will be Khori Bennett. The striker is second in the Golden Boot race, with 14 goals so far in the USL regular season. Despite his form, the last three matches for the Switchbacks ended in goalless draws against New Mexico, Detroit, and Oakland. A win for the Switchbacks paired with some results elsewhere in the league would clinch a playoff berth for Colorado Springs.

Sacramento also looked to book their place in the playoffs, as an outright win would clinch their spot. But the Republic were also looking to strengthen their case for a home match in the first round of the playoffs, as they entered the match in 4th place in the Western Conference standings. The Republic put their 10-game unbeaten streak on the line in this one, as their last loss came at the beginning of August. But some of the results on that streak left a lot to be desired, as some draws could've been victories. This includes the Republic's last match, as they came away from Tulsa on a 1-1 draw. Neill Collins started that match with a rotated side, but once the subs came in, they really pressured Tulsa late. Memo Rodriguez continued his red-hot run of form as he scored the equalizing goal off a free kick. The last time these two sides met was in June, when Jack Gurr's goal proved the difference.

Coach Alan McCann had this lineup for Colorado Springs:

Coach Neill Collins made this selection for Sacramento:

A couple of changes from the last match against Tulsa. Coach Collins continued with the four-back setup, with Jack Gurr returning to the starting lineup. Ryan Spaulding was shifted up into the midfield as Lee Desmond lined up in the leftback spot. Pep Casas and Memo Rodriguez would also return to the midfield in this one. Cal Jennings would lead the line. Mayele Malango returned to the teamsheet after a stint on international duty.

Colorado Springs opened the match with a high press that gave the Republic fits to play out of. Play was built out from the back as a long ball connected with Adrien Perez running down the flank in the 6th minute. Perez played the ball through to Frank Daroma, moving past the Republic backline. Daroma got into the Republic box and took his shot, but Danny Vitiello came out from the net to close down the angle and block the shot.

And pair that high line with a direct style of play, and it makes the Switchbacks a dangerous team to turn the ball over to, as Sacramento nearly paid for it in the 23rd minute. The high press forced Blake Willey to send the ball upfield, where the Switchbacks won the initial duel. The play works its way back to the Sacramento net as Juan Tejada picks up the ball for a dribble in the midfield. Tejada plays Adrien Perez through, and he cuts across the top of the Republic box. Danny Vitiello was already on the ground to read the low shot. Khori Bennett picked up the rebound and put in a looping cross that was caught by Danny Vitiello before it could find its target.

Neither side could find a breakthrough as the halftime whistle blew. The Switchbacks controlled the pace and looked the more dangerous side as they tested Danny Vitiello repeatedly. The Republic got a couple of opportunities, but the Switchbacks' defense blocked them or they went off target. No shots on target for the Republic in the first half. It was hard for the Republic to find footing, as the opposing press stifled any possession the Republic tried to build.

Coach Collins made a tactical substitution to bring on some more firepower as Tyler Wolff replaced Freddy Kleeman at the half. This pushed Ryan Spaulding into the backline. Here's hoping this was just a tactical substitution and not injury-related for Freddy Kleeman.

The Switchbacks opened the scoring early in the second half. In the 47th minute, the Switchbacks had a freekick opportunity that was taken by Adrien Perez. The cross was put deep into the Republic box as it found Talen Maples. The Switchbacks' centerback won his duel against Lee Desmond in the air and headed the ball down and it bounced past Danny Vitiello.

Sacramento were building their way into the game as they put the Switchbacks under some pressure. Coach Collins made a pair of substitutions in the 61st minute, with Kyle Edwards and Forster Ajago taking to the pitch to replace Cal Jennings and Blake Willey.

The Republic were really testing the Switchbacks' backline, and they got an opportunity in the 71st minute. Memo Rodriguez went down the left flank to duel Aidan Rocha. Memo got into the Switchbacks' box and shielded the ball but was brought down by Rocha to be awarded a penalty. Kyle Edwards stepped up to take the penalty and sent Christian Herrera the wrong way to slot it in the opposite corner.

In the aftermath of the goal, Coach Collins made a defensive substitution to bring on Michel Benitez for Ryan Spaulding.

Coach Collins was forced to make another substitution in the 78th minute. After a pair of rough challenges, both Tyler Wolff and Danny Crisostomo were down on the ground. Crisostomo recovered and continued in the match. But Tyler Wolff was taken out and replaced by Mayele Malango.

Both teams woke up coming down the stretch as a victory would be a significant outcome for either team's playoff outlook. The game opened up as both teams tried to outdo each other and get another clean look at goal. Sacramento had been the aggressors in the second half, but after the equalizer, the Switchbacks came back hunting to retake the lead.

Sacramento was trying to find play via Mayele Malango and was trying to connect to Forster Ajago and Kyle Edwards in open play. But no more goals came in this contest, as it ended level. Both teams fought for this one, but neither could land the decisive blow to take all three points. Sacramento let the Switchbacks dominate in the first half and then fought for a goal later in the second. This wasn't the most inspiring of performances from the Republic attack in the final stretch, so hopefully they can wake back up in their next match against El Paso. But with this result, Sacramento has confirmed their place in the postseason. Onwards!

Coach Neill Collins on the result:

Oh, you know, frustrated. I don't think we were at our best tonight. I got to give credit to Colorado. I thought they were a very good outfit. I think there's not often I'd say that we were maybe second best, but I thought in the first half we were second best. Thought they had a very good performance, but I felt in the second half that we would be able to come on strong, and we did. Got the goal. Thought it looked like we were going to get the goal, and then after that, I'll be honest. I thought the officials ruined the game. Constantly stopping, constantly standing. We have a fantastic crowd here tonight. They want to see the game played, and it was just far too much stopping and starting. And I don't think that was then reflected by the six minutes of injury time. I think there should've been a lot more. And look, Colorado wanted to win the game as well at the end, but that was frustrating for us. Not our best, but I think had the second half played a little differently, some of the decisions could have could have helped the flow.

Danny Crisostomo on the match:

“Yeah, I mean it's a tough game. You know, obviously we didn't play the prettiest of what we're used to in the recent form, but I think it's crucial that we got a point. We clinch playoffs, and we just have to go for the next one. Every game is going to be like a playoff game towards the end of the season because the table's so tight.”

Key Takeaways:

  • Normally I praise the Republic defense if they can hold an opponent to less than three shots on target. The Republic were held to one shot on target. And it was a penalty. Goals need to come at some point from one of the strikers that is not named Kyle Edwards. Memo Rodriguez is technically our second goal threat, but he's not a striker.
  • The Republic were outplayed on their home turf by another playoff team. And this could be a preview of a possible matchup we see in the postseason. Sacramento struggled against the Switchbacks' defensive setup.
  • We have claimed our spot in the postseason, and hosting a playoff match is still in our hands.
