2026 Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 1, El Paso Locmotive FC 2

2026 Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 1, El Paso Locmotive FC 2

Sacramento was looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season as they hosted El Paso Locomotive FC. And the Republic suffered their first defeat of the season as El Paso capitalized on some defensive miscues. Sacramento clawed one back with a penalty from Michel Benitez, but it wasn't enough to get a result.

Behind Tulsa and Hartford, El Paso had also had a surprisingly successful season last year. After finishing last in the conference in 2024, Locomotive got to the fourth seed in the Western Conference in 2025. In the playoffs, they had a similar fate to the Republic as they also got ousted in the first round to Phoenix Rising. Andres Cabrera and Armando Moreno led the line for El Paso as each scored 10 goals on the season for El Paso. But with the departure of Cabrera to the Charleston Battery, El Paso needed a replacement. And they found a great one in Rubio Rubin. Rubin came to the Battery partway through the season last season and then moved to El Paso ahead of the 2026 season. And he is off to a flying start for the Locomotive. He is tied for the lead in the Golden Boot race heading into this week with 3 goals already scored in the regular season. Rubin has scored in every match so far this season for El Paso, including their Open Cup match against Laredo Heat. Can this attack be sustainable for El Paso?

Sacramento was looking to get back in the win column after a disappointing draw against Monterey. They held control for a majority of the match and were rewarded for it as Forster Ajago continued his hot run of form. But in the 85th minute, Monterey flipped a quick counterattack on them and converted their first shot of the night up to that point. And it could've gotten even worse for Sacramento as a late penalty was called against them. But Danny Vitiello came up big to keep the match even and help the Republic hold onto their one point. Can the Republic recover their form against another tough Western Conference opponent?

Coach Junior Gonzalez had this setup for El Paso:

Coach Neill Collins made this selection for Sacramento:

A couple of changes to the starters for this matchup. It would be Pep Casas getting the start as the center attacking mid behind Forster Ajago. In the last match, Blake Willey started in that position. Looks like Neill Collins is still figuring out who best to replace Memo Rodriguez, who went down with an injury. And then Dominik Wanner was rewarded for his efforts in the past couple of contests with his start on the wing. He would take the place of Mayele Malango, who has been called up for international duty.

The players took a minute in a continued demonstration as they are still in a labor negotiation with the league.

It was a sloppy start to the match from both sides. Neither team could really connect their passes or establish dominance in the game. That was paired with some whistles that halted any tempo that was built up by the players.

The first chance of the night came to Sacramento in the 17th minute. Dominik Wanner had been working the left wing and was able to find some space to send in a cross. The ball bounced around and through the El Paso defense, and it got to Arturo Rodriguez. The shot didn't have the pace it needed as it was caught by El Paso's Sebastian Mora-Mora.

And then El Paso looked to capitalize on an opportunity immediately after. A lazy pass was turned over just a couple of yards outside the Republic's box. Alex Mendez gets the ball in the midfield and passes to Armando Moreno, making a run. Moreno at the top of the Republic box, cut to the inside and shot with his right foot. Danny Vitiello, however, was alert and could only manage a parry on the shot that ended up cleared out of the box.

Another chance for El Paso was in the 23rd minute. Another turnover in the midfield as another turnover from the Republic defense put them under immediate pressure. This time, it would be Alex Mendez taking the shot from outside the Republic's box. Danny Vitiello couldn't get a hand on the shot, but thankfully, it hit the post and bounced back into the field of play, but it got cleared out.

After a couple of times knocking at the Republic's door, El Paso broke through for the first goal of the night in the 25th minute. El Paso gets some slow buildup going down the left flank, and the ball gets to Eric Calvillo in the midfield. He gives it off to Armando Moreno, moving into the Republic's box. There seemed to be some miscommunication in the Republic defense as Moreno was free to spin around and put in a low shot that was just out of the reach of Danny Vitiello.

Sacramento was showing signs of life in the aftermath of the goal. But El Paso had another opportunity to add to their lead in the 36th minute. Mark-Anthony Kaye and Armando Moreno were in a shouler-to-shoulder contest inside the Republic box. And it looks like Moreno was tripped up going for the ball. Alex Mendez stepped up to take the penalty and hammered it home for El Paso.

Sacramento looked to get something before the half in the 38th minute. Arturo Rodriguez was dribbling into the El Paso box and took his chance from distance. It got deflected by an El Paso defender, but it fell into the path of Ryan Spaulding out wide. He took his opportunity, and it hit off the post before it got cleared.

And again, Sacramento was testing the keeper before the half in the 44th minute. They had a free kick opportunity outside the El Paso box. And it was Arturo Rodriguez who tried to capitalize on the set piece. His shot was on frame, but a diving Sebastian Mora-Mora was there to block the shot out.

At halftime, El Paso held a 2-0 advantage. The Sacramento defense looked uncharacteristically sloppy in the first half. The passing out of the backline didn't connect with their targets and was putting them back under immediate pressure. The goals that El Paso scored took advantage of the lack of coordination from a usually solid defensive unit. The attack was doing their best to get back into the contest and were testing the El Paso goal, but had nothing to show for it so far.

The second half started with the same minute demonstration as the start of the match.

And Sacramento caught a break in the 54th minute as El Paso was forced down to play with 10 men. Eric Calvillo was given his second yellow after a questionable handball was ruled against him by the referee. This was off a throw-in as Calvillo, facing the other direction, reached above his head and blocked the ball with his arm. The first yellow card against him was given in the 44th minute for a tackle on Arturo Rodriguez. This led to Arturo's chance from a set piece.

Sacramento again came close in the 62nd minute. A corner kick was swung in by Michel Benitez, and it found Forster Ajago among the melee of players. The shot hit the crossbar and cleared out.

The first substitution of the night came in the 64th minute. Kyle Edwards came on to replace Dominik Wanner. We saw this attacking look for the first time last week against Monterey. Curious to see what it looks like with more time on the clock. As a result, Michel Benitez had free rein going down the left as he would be moving up and down the pitch. Pep Casas would float around in the midfield and cover for Benitez if he moved up.

Coach Collins made another substitution in the 84th minute. Aaron Essel came onto the field for his Republic debut and would take the place of Pep Casas.

Sacramento was trying to capitalize on the man advantage for the rest of the second half, but couldn't find a way through an organized El Paso defense. That was until stoppage time when a line-breaking ball from Arturo Rdriguez got through to Mark-Anthony Kaye. He cut back and caught Ricky Ruiz in a late slide tackle. Michel Benitez was the interesting choice to step up to take the penalty, and he put it past Sebastian Mora-Mora to cut down the El Paso lead.

The Republic was looking for a late equalizer in stoppage time. Aaron Essel swung in a cross that bounced around in the El Paso box. Kyle Edwards won the ball and got a spin in before he took his shot. It was aimed at the near post but that was where Sebastian Mora-Mora was set up as he made his clearance.

And Sebastian Mora-Mora was called on once again at the death. With Sacramento throwing the kitchen sink Michel Benitez put in a cross. Freddy Kleeman got the first shot at goal with a header that was blocked by Mora-Mora. Forster Ajago got to the rebound and shot from point-blank range, but again at Mora-Mora. Mark-Anthony Kaye got the second rebound and tried to get it into the net, but it went off the post and was cleared.

But at full time, their efforts were not enough as Sacramento suffered their first loss of the season. Sacramento made some mistakes in the first half, and El Paso capitalized on them. It just left the Republic in a hole to fight from in the second half. They had a sense of urgency in stoppage time, but where was that from the start of the second half? The attack looked decent in their chance creation, but didn't do enough to capitalize on them. The next match is the Open Cup against Valley 559. Onwards!

Key Takeaways:

  • There was some uncharacteristic sloppiness coming from the defense, and El Paso made them pay for it.
  • Arturo Rodriguez was an attacking sparkplug this match, and these are the kinds of performances I'm expecting to see from him the rest of the season.
