2026 Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 5, Sporting JAX 0

The Republic are back home after a three-game stint on the road and were looking to set off some fireworks in front of the State Fair crowd against Sporting JAX.

It has been a rough debut for new side Sporting JAX. They come into this match at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table, five points back from the team above them and thirteen points adrift from the playoff line. They have only gotten two wins across all competitions this season. But strangely enough, one of those wins was against the defending USL Champions, Pittsburgh Riverhounds. But if there is one bright spot for Liam Fox's men, it is that this team can score. Out of their last 10 competitive matches, they've been shut out only twice, including their last match against El Paso. And out of the eight matches they have scored in, they were held to a single goal only once. It's difficult to keep this squad off the scoreboard. And that will be the main task for the Republic's defenders as they try to limit the effect of the Jacksonville attack.

We are now in the second half of the season, and the Republic have a chance to accomplish something they haven't done yet this season: win back-to-back games. They did win consecutive games between the league and cup competitions in May. But they have failed to win multiple games in a row in the league. After their derby win in Oakland, thanks to a brace from Kyle Edwards, the Republic have a prime opportunity to do that. They will need to hope that the offense that showed up in Oakland shows up again to try and outscore this high-octane opposing offense.

One change was made to the starting lineup from the match against Oakland. Chibi Ukaegbu got the nod to start in the left back position, which was occupied by Aaron Essel in the last match. One question I had coming out of the Oakland match was who would start in this one to lead the line for the Republic. Ajago scored a beautiful goal in the match against Charleston before being given a red card. And then you had Kyle Edwards get a brace off the bench. But Coach Collins opted to go with neither of them, as it would be Tyler Wolff being tasked to lead the line to start off this one.

A couple of other notes on the bench. Freddy Kleeman returned to the teamsheet for the first time after going down with injury. And the club's latest 25-day signing, Tim Leibold, makes his first appearance on the bench. 

One thing to note about the Republic setup was that they were in a hybrid 3-back setup with Jack Gurr playing high. It will be interesting to see how this club deals with the high press that comes from the Jacksonville press from their front three.

And the Republic got the scoring going early in the sixth minute. A hospital ball from the Jacksonville keeper, Jake McGuire, to one of his teammates left them vulnerable to Pep Casas pouncing on them. Casas won the ball and dribbled it into the Jacksonville box. A cross was played to Tyler Wolff in the middle of the box, and he just one-touched the pass into the back of the net.

The Republic were doing a decent job at keeping Jacksonville at arm's reach as the first half progressed. They were controlling the possession game as they found ways to pass their way through the opposing midfield. Jacksonville had a couple of spells of possession but were mainly relegated to holding the ball in their own half or springing counterattacking opportunities down the flanks.

Sacramento doubled the lead in the 38th minute. Memo Rodriguez sent a corner kick into the Jacksonville box. The cross met the head of Jared Timmer, who ran under the flight path and rose to meet the cross, battling against a Jacksonville defender. The shot went bar down and into the back of the net.

And the Republic piled on the lead in the 40th minute. Memo Rodriguez with a line-breaking pass that went down the center of the park to find Tyler Wolff running behind. Wolff got on the ball and lifted his shot over Jake McGuire to secure a brace for himself.

Memo Rodriguez was on fire as he created another goal for the Republic in the 43rd minute. Another corner kick opportunity from the opposite side was sent in by Memo Rodriguez. This time Lee Desmond was the target as he flashed his run to the near post. His header snuck between McGuire and the post to add to the tally.

That was as clinical a half as you could ask for from the Republic. The squad was stringing together passes and putting away their opportunities. I can't recall if a Republic player has gotten three assists in one half, either way Memo Rodriguez has been on fire in the middle of the park. It was also great to see that this different look on the front line with Tyler Wolff is starting to produce goals. The Republic were also doing a great job at limiting what Sporting JAX could do moving forward, as the visitors did not register a shot on target in the first half.

The Republic started the second half as aggressively as they finished the first. A chance from Mayele Malango was turned away. And an early bid for a hat trick from Tyler Wolff was blocked by the keeper.

The match had slowed down in tempo, but the Republic were still pressing for chances. In the 65th minute, Coach Collins made a trio of substitutions. Kyle Edwards and Danny Crisostomo stepped on to replace Memo Rodriguez and Mark-Anthony Kaye. And to make his debut for Sacramento was Tim Liebold as he took Jack Gurr's place. Tyler Wolff would slide over to the left wing.

And in the 69th minute, Tyler Wolff claimed his hat trick. Mayele Malango forced a turnover in the Jacksonville half and drilled a run down the middle of the park. He slid the ball over to Kyle Edwards running alongside him as he fired a shot. The ball got deflected backward but into the path of Tyler Wolff. The ball was bounced off of a Jacksonville defender and went in over Jake McGuire.

The Republic made another substitution in the 72nd minute. Alfredo Midence made his Heart Health Park debut as he took the place of Mayele Malango.

And another substitution was made in the 81st minute. Blake Willey was the final player taken off for Arturo Rodriguez.

And the tempo of the match slowed down as both sides just played until the final whistle blew. Great result for the Republic. Glad to see the team clicking at this point in time. Granted, there is a caveat to the opposition we just played. But that being said, you still need to execute on the night, and the Republic did exactly that. Stellar nights from both Tyler Wolff and Memo Rodriguez. Hopefully the team continues this hot streak as they go on the road to Tulsa. Onwards!
