2026 Match Recap: Brooklyn FC 1, Sacramento Republic FC 1

2026 Match Recap: Brooklyn FC 1, Sacramento Republic FC 1

From one first-ever matchup to another, Sacramento traveled to New York to square off against Brooklyn FC. Sacramento were able to save a point on the road as a late penalty was converted in stoppage time by Michel Benitez.

It's this club's first year of existence in the USL Championship, as Brooklyn FC is looking to find where they stand in the Eastern Conference pecking order. And they've had a harsh existence so far. After an opening day win against Indy Eleven, Brooklyn went on a losing streak against Detroit, Hartford, Lexington, and Louisville. But their last match was their best result so far, a 3-0 win over the Charleston Battery. Marlon LeBlanc's men have had some stiff competition to start their existence, and Sacramento poses another difficult test for them, but they will be hoping that iron sharpens iron, and they will come out of this crucible on fire.

Sacramento has had a busy start to their season, but after their last match, they will be hoping that a little bit of rest will do the squad some good. The Republic bowed out of the Open Cup in their last contest, falling in a penalty shootout to MLS's Minnesota United. It was a tough contest that saw them go toe-to-toe for a full 120 minutes. But despite the result, there were plenty of positives to take from that match. And now with one competition out of the way, Neill Collins' men will focus back on the league and look to climb their way up the conference table.

Coach Marlon LeBlanc had this setup for Brooklyn:

Coach Neill Collins made this selection for Sacramento:

After a week of rest from the Minnesota match, Coach Collins was hoping that some rejuvenated legs would be suiting up for the Republic. Chibi Ukaegbu took the spot of Danny Crisostomo after Crisostomo was pulled after tweaking something in the Minnesota game. Aaron Essel would be in the defensive midfield role we saw him in at the end of the last match, with Chibi at right back. Arturo Rodriguez returned as a starter after coming off the bench in the Open Cup clash. And we got some returning faces on the bench, with Jack Gurr and Rohan Chivukula making the teamsheet after both dealing with injuries.

The match started with a minute's protest from the players.

Brooklyn got a fast start as they drew the first shot on target in the 8th minute. A long ball that sailed over the Republic backline was brought down by Stefan Stojanovic in the Republic box. Stojanovic spins past Michel Benitez, but that allowed Danny Vitiello to step up and block the shot at the point of attack.

The narrow pitch in Brooklyn was not conducive to the way the Republic likes to use width to build their attacks. But they were able to send in some threatening crosses into the box that caught Jackson Lee's attention.

Brooklyn opened the scoring in the 26th minute against the run of play. After a spell of Sacramento possession that pressured the Brooklyn box, the home side broke down the right side. Callum Frogson put an early cross across the face of the Republic's box to Markus Anderson. Anderson faced a challenge to receive the ball, but skipped past two Republic defenders and cut back onto his preferred right foot. He curled effort got past the Republic defense and was out of reach of Danny Vitiello.

Aaron Essel might have escaped being given a second yellow card before the half. The first yellow was awarded after Essel caught Tommy McNamara with a high elbow in the follow-through on a challenge in the 37th minute. Then the call in question came in the 39th minute as Aaron Essel again caught Tommy McNamara again with his elbow as he attempted an aerial duel.

Despite looking the more dangerous side and applying consistent pressure on Brooklyn's defense, Sacramento had nothing to show for its efforts in the first half. They found themselves down a goal after failing to register a shot on target. That being said, Jackson Lee was the busier of the two keepers as Sacramento sent in multiple crosses into the box. But none could find their targets. Brooklyn was using their narrow pitch to their advantage as they played direct in their counterattacks and capitalized on a fast opportunity to get the advantage.

Coach Collins brought on Dominik Wanner to replace Aaron Essel. Ryan Spaulding moved into the leftback position, as Michel Benitez slotted into the defensive midfield. Wanner was put on as the left midfielder.

The second half started with the same minute protest from the players.

Sacramento's first shot was in the 54th minute. A long free kick was taken down by Forster Ajago. He headed it back immediately into the path of Blake Willey. The midfielder took his shot, but it was caught by Jackson Lee.

Coach Collins made another substitution in the 60th minute. Jack Gurr stepped onto the pitch to make his 2026 debut and take the place of Chibi Ukaegbu.

Sacramento was really trying to press the Brooklyn backline as Coach Collins readied up two more substitutions in the 70th minute. Kyle Edwards and Brandon Cambridge took the places of Forster Ajago and Arturo Rodriguez.

The closest shot for the Republic in the night so far came in the 75th minute. Jack Gurr put a throw-in into the Brooklyn box that bounced around before getting to Lee Desmond. The captain played the ball back to the top of the box and Michel Benitez who struck it sweetly. The shot got past all the traffic but went off the bar and got cleared out.

Brooklyn got a crack at goal as they built up with Juan Obregon Jr. in the 84th minute. He got on the end of a through ball and was threatening one of the Republic's posts. His shot was fired at the near post, but he was stopped by Danny Vitiello.

And in the last minute of stoppage time, there would be one final twist. Jack Gurr earned a penalty for the Republic as he was taken down in the Brooklyn box by Gabriel Alves. Alves was pulling at Gurr's shirt and then chopped him down as Gurr moved past him. Alves got his first yellow card in the 62nd minute for time wasting on a throw-in. Michel Benitez stepped up and stood over the penalty attempt. And Benitez sent Jackson Lee the wrong way as he calmly put the ball in the opposite corner.

And that would be the final kick of the game as Sacramento salvaged a point on the road. Good to see the Republic fighting until the bitter end, even under harsh conditions. I am getting a little concerned about the attack. I mean, there is a caveat for this match with the pitch being so short and narrow that it becomes a pinball machine on the pitch. But registering zero shots on target in the first half is a little worrisome, granted, some of the shots taken were blocked. But the Republic turned it around in the second half and got a point as their reward. I can't complain with a point on the road. Next up is the start of the USL Cup as Sacramento hosts USL League One's Spokane. Onwards!
