2026 Match Recap: El Paso Locomotive FC 0, Sacramento Republic FC 1
A top-four clash in the Western Conference out in the desert of El Paso would have some playoff ramifications as the Republic came to town.
The team at the top of the Western Conference, El Paso Locomotive, still had a lot to play for in these final two matches of the season. Despite their dreams of snatching the Players' Shield being effectively dashed this past week, they still had the target of securing the number one berth in the Western Conference. Their recent form has only helped their chances, as they've won 9 of their last 11 league matches. They won't be able to clinch it outright with a result in this game, but a win would help them keep an advantage over the chasing New Mexico United. El Paso will face New Mexico in the final game of their regular season, a rivalry clash as the number one seed hangs in the balance. Rubio Rubin has fueled the Locomotive's efforts as he leads the fight for the Golden Boot this season, with 16 goals so far. The last time these two sides clashed was early in the season, in March, when El Paso won 2-1.
One of the teams chasing El Paso in the conference standings, Sacramento Republic, were still technically in the hunt for the top seed. But they would need a win against the Locomotive here, plus for results elsewhere in the league to fall in their favor. The club, however, could clinch a top-four finish if they won here and Tulsa or Lexington failed to win their matches this matchweek. The Republic is undefeated since August, but this unbeaten streak has included more draws than wins. This includes their last two contests against potential playoff foes Tulsa and Colorado Springs. The last match against the Switchbacks was a bit disappointing as the Republic only managed one shot on target, from the penalty spot. A win here would be a statement for the Republic and would put the rest of the league on notice that the Republic can fight with the best.

A couple of changes to the Republic lineup from the last game against the Switchbacks. Mayele Malango reclaimed his spot on the wing from Blake Willey. Forster Ajago would be asked to lead the line as Cal Jennings would work off the wing. Michel Benitez is now back to being a starter for the Republic, replacing Ryan Spaulding. Mark-Anthony Kaye has also returned to the squad after an injury and was named to the bench. Freddy Kleeman appears alright after being substituted early in the last match. Tyler Wolff, who went down with an injury against Colorado Springs, did not make the teamsheet for this one.
El Paso was looking to get their talismanic striker off to a hot start in the 3rd minute. Ricardo Ruiz sent in a cross that Rubin headed. The headed effort was steered on target but deflected away by Danny Vitiello. The ball got cleared out for a corner kick.
And then in the resulting corner kick opportunities, the ball ended up in the back of the net for El Paso. Noah Dollenmayer used all of his height to reach a cross put in the Republic box that bounced over Danny Vitiello and into the net. But Arturo Ortiz, standing in front of Vitiello and interfering with the play in an offside position, made the goal null and void.
Mayale Malango nearly broke through in the 12th minute. He won the initial duel for the ball and, with a quick give-and-go down the left, worked his way past his mark. Malango opted to aim at the far post for his shot, but Abraham Romero was able to get an arm to it. The ball still bounced past the keeper and had to be cleared off the line by Noah Dollenmayer.
There were some calls for a penalty to be awarded to Sacramento in the 21st minute. Michel Benitez played the ball through to Cal Jennings streaking into the El Paso box. Abraham Romero came out to meet the striker, but Jennings played the ball past the keeper before he got wiped out in the box. But for some reason, the referee didn't call a penalty and just awarded a corner kick.
Sacramento had some chances to close out the first half. Jack Gurr and Memo Rodriguez did their thing as the team's creators. They were able to connect with Forster Ajago and Mayele Malango up front but were not able to trouble Abraham Romero in net.
At halftime, the sides went into the break level at zero goals apiece. The Republic can definitely feel hard done by after wrongfully not being awarded a penalty. But they were really able to take the fight to El Paso, as this has been an open match with neither defense being on lockdown. There were a few troubling moments that El Paso managed to dodge. And Sacramento just needed one bounce to go their way to get a breakthrough. The Republic defense did its job keeping the El Paso attack in check. The Locomotive was called offsides 7 times in the first half alone. The defense did their job tracking the runs of Rubio Rubin and Armando Moreno and didn't let them get time on the ball.
The opening minutes of the second half were just like the first. Sacramento controlled the tempo and had a couple more opportunities they couldn't capitalize on. El Paso still struggled to break free of the Republic's defense as they kept getting called offside.
Coach Collins made a pair of substitutions in the 62nd minute. Ryan Spaulding and Alfredo Midence came on to replace Michel Benitez and Mayele Malango.
Another substitution was brought on by Neill Collins in the 69th minute. Kyle Edwards replaced Forster Ajago in an attempt to find a breakthrough.
The best chance in open play for the Republic so far came in the 73rd minute. Alfredo Midence danced through a couple of El Paso marks to send a low cross into the box. The ball was originally deflected by Kyle Edwards and his defender as they dueled in the immediate vicinity. But the ball deflected back towards the middle of the box where Cal Jennings could run onto the shot, but he leaned too far back and put the shot over the bar.
Coach Collins made another pair of substitutions in the 82nd minute. Blake Willey and Mark-Anthony Kaye replaced Cal Jennings and Pep Casas.
The Republic finally got their opener in the 87th minute. Play was built up down the middle as Mark-Anthony Kaye got the ball at the top of the El Paso box. Sacramento sent a flurry of attackers into the box for Kaye to pick out. He picked out Memo Rodriguez running unmanned, and Rodriguez shot it past Abraham Romero.

And the Republic held on after that goal to secure the result. Gritty victory in an environment that the Republic aren't historically successful at to get a clutch win down the stretch. The Republic did what needed to be done and limited El Paso's tools moving forward. The Locomotive forwards weren't allowed to have much of an impact in this one, and the Republic kept hammering away to get the result. Next up is our regular-season finale against an Oakland Roots side still fighting for a postseason spot. Onwards!
Key Takeaways:
- There is a scenario for the Republic to clinch the top spot in the conference. A win against Oakland paired with a draw between El Paso and New Mexico would see the Republic clinch the top seed off of tiebreakers.
- The Republic limited one of the best attacks in the league. Pair that with the Republic forwards scraping a goal in the last couple of minutes. In a playoff context, that is all you need to do to keep your season going.
- This is a result that the Republic can hang their hat on this late in the season. And it's something you can point to to show the grit and determination that this Republic side has.
