2026 Match Recap: Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, Sacramento Republic FC

Two staunch defenses went head-to-head in a battle of 5th places as Sacramento traveled to Pittsburgh. Neither side would find the back of the net as both defenses held firm. This result also marked a new piece of history for Danny Vitiello as he became the first USL keeper to record 50 clean sheets for a single club.

The defending champions, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, were looking to defend their crown in this campaign. The Riverhounds got off to a hot start to their title defense and were in the middle of the Eastern Conference table heading into this one. Their last match saw them head into Oakland to dispatch the Roots 1-0. But in the match before that, it was a championship rematch as Tulsa got some revenge by beating the Riverhounds 1-0. These two sides have only met four times previously, but the last time these two squared off, it was a 1-0 win for the Riverhounds back in 2024.

It has been an up-and-down week for Sacramento. Coming off a 5-0 victory over a lowly Sporting JAX side, Sacramento had a two-game road trip that would see them square off against both teams that played in the USL final last season. Their first test of the road trip saw them lose 0-1 to a quality Tulsa side. It was a tightly contested affair as neither side could really dominate the match. It took some magic from Jamie Webber to get the victory for Tulsa.

A couple of changes for Collins as the Republic are coming off a midweek match in Tulsa. Mark-Anthony Kaye went down with an injury in the last match, so Pep Casas would be taking his spot. Tim Liebold earns his first start for the Republic as he took over the spot held by Chibi Ukaegbu. And Forster Ajago would get the start to lead the line over Tyler Wolff.

Both teams had a fast start to the match as each fired opportunistic balls into the opposing boxes. Both defenses were up to the task in the opening minutes as they turned away those chances. Sacramento did force Nico Campuzano into making a couple of saves early, but nothing to really trouble the keeper. Jack Gurr was finding some success early in picking out his targets in Pittsburgh's box, but none of the resulting shots could be converted.

Pittsburgh gave Danny Vitiello his first test in the 20th minute as they built possession down the left. Some quick passing resulted in Albert Dikwa running into Sacramento's box. His driven effort was smothered by Danny Vitiello and controlled by the Republic keeper.

Trevor Amann nearly gave a dose of revenge to Sacramento in the 34th minute. Elliot Goldthorp sent in an inviting cross into the Republic box. Trevor Amann rose to head the ball straight at the Republic goal, but Danny Vitiello was there to deflect the shot. The follow-up was put over the bar and out.

The first half was finishing with a flourish as Sacramento was pushing to find the opening goal in the 40th minute. Jack Gurr took down a ball beautifully and dribbled across the Riverhounds' box. He played the ball to the opposite flank where Mayele Malango could run onto it. He took a touch back towards the inside of the field and bent in a shot that deflected off the post and out.

And then on the subsequent attack for Pittsburgh, Charles Ahl floated a ball over the Republic defense to find Albert Dikwa in the middle of the box. From point-blank range, Dikwa's headed effort was put down to the ground but was off target and went out.

Both defenses were tested but were holding up as the match was goalless heading into the halftime break. The game had a back-and-forth flow as both sides put themselves in dangerous positions. Sacramento had the edge in total shots created and shots on target. But Pittsburgh had the more dangerous of chances as both Trevor Amann and Albert Dikwa had point-blank headers in the Republic box. Sacramento's defense would need to step up in the second half to prevent those chances from arising by keeping the balls out of the box and not allowing the two most dangerous men in Pittsburgh to have free shots in the box.

The second half settled down in tempo and chance creation as both sides settled into their defensive postures.

Coach Collins made a pair of substitutions in the 67th minute. Kyle Edwards and Chibi Ukaegbu stepped on to replace Forster Ajago and Tim Leibold.

Kyle Edwards was getting some chances as he was fighting in the Riverhounds box as the ball was in his proximity. Sacramento had a couple of corner kick opportunities that caused some scrambles from the Riverhounds. Nico Campuzano and the Pittsburgh defense did well enough to find a way out of these precarious positions as Sacramento was trying to force the issue.

Arturo Rodriguez and Tyler Wolff were called into action in the 78th minute for Neill Collins. They would be taking the places of Mayele Malango and Blake Willey.

Coach Collins made one more substitution in the 87th minute, coming down the home stretch. Aaron Essel stepped on to replace Pep Casas in the midfield.

And the final whistle blew as neither side could land a decisive blow. On paper, this is a good result for Sacramento. A clean sheet and a point earned against the defending champions. And for a majority of the match, the Republic looked the better side. But they didn't generate the most dangerous opportunities. They held their own against the defending champions, but if you want to consider yourself a contender, these are the types of games against some high-level opposition that you need to come away with all three points. This game was definitely there for the taking. The Republic come home for their next one as they play host to Lexington. Onwards!
