2026 Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 3, Las Vegas Lights FC 2

2026 Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 3, Las Vegas Lights FC 2

The final five matches of the season for Sacramento started with them hosting the Las Vegas Lights. The Republic found themselves in another shootout and came out victorious, 3-2. Memo Rodriguez continued his run of form as he got another goal and assist. Tyler Wolff and Kyle Edwards scored in complement to get the result for the Republic.

Just outside of the playoff berths, Las Vegas were running out of chances to make up ground on the teams above them. The Lights got a win against Hartford the last time out. They entered this match level on points with both Oakland and Phoenix, tied for 9th place in the Western Conference, and five points behind San Antonio in the final playoff slot. The last time these two met was earlier this season in April, when the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Fresh off a win against New Mexico, Sacramento was looking to continue their climb up the Western Conference standings. The Republic had to endure a shootout in Albuquerque to come away with all three points against one of the Western Conference leaders. Kyle Edwards ended up scoring the deciding goal, but the performance of the night belonged to Memo Rodriguez as he notched a brace and added another assist to his tally in that match. The Republic rode into this match on an 8-game unbeaten run and looked to continue to make a statement of intent for the rest of the Western Conference with another result here.

Coach Devin Rensing had this setup for Las Vegas:

Coach Neill Collins made this selection for Sacramento:

Interestingly, Coach Collins opted to use the back four formation we saw in the win in New Mexico. One change to the starting personnel was Tyler Wolff getting the start in place of Blake Willey. And for the first time since June, Michel Benitez would be named to the teamsheet for the Republic.

The first couple of minutes were frenetic as Las Vegas came into the match needing a result. They had an opportunity early on from a free kick when Oalex Anderson headed a ball that just went over the crossbar. Sacramento was more than willing to meet the challenge set by Las Vegas. Jack Gurr, Memo Rodriguez, and Ryan Spaulding went to work early, sending in threatening balls into the Las Vegas box, but none could find the marks of Cal Jennings and Tyler Wolff.

It was Las Vegas to open the match early in the 13th minute. The play was built down the middle as Nate Jones sent in a line-breaking ball down the middle of the park to Christian Pinzon. The midfielder turned upfield and threaded a through ball to Oalex Anderson, making a run behind the Republic's defense. Anderson's first touch was all he needed as he hammered the shot past Danny Vitello and into the back of the net.

Sacramento pressed on to find an equalizer in response. But the Republic's continued pressing left them susceptible to Las Vegas playing direct and connecting to even more runs behind the back line. Las Vegas were continuing to try and find the goalscorer, Oalex Anderson, as another opportunity ended with Anderson putting a sliding shot over the bar. Shots from Memo Rodriguez and Pep Casas put the Las Vegas keeper, Triston Henry, on alert, but they sailed over the bar.

And from out of nowhere Memo Rodriguez equalized the match in the 35th minute. Danny Crisostomo moved forward into the Las Vegas third and passed the ball off to Memo Rodriguez a couple yards outside of the Las Vegas box. Memo let it ride and sent a rocket into the Las Vegas net, keeping Triston Henry planted to the ground.

Sacramento pushed to get the lead before the halftime whistle as they were again mounting pressure outside of the Las Vegas box. A curled effort from Ryan Spaulding was the closest they got during this period. But Jared Timmer also had a decent headed opportunity that went off target. Oalex Anderson was buzzing around the Republic's backline as he nearly got another goal if it wasn't for him being offside.

The sides entered the halftime break even on one goal apiece. Sacramento was the more dominant side in the first half, holding nearly 60% possession and outshooting Las Vegas seven to five. But the chances Las Vegas generated off the counterattack, aimed directly at Oalex Anderson or Johnny Rodriguez, were equally threatening. There definitely is more room for the Republic to grow into this match as Jack Gurr has had plenty of space going down the right-hand side, but none of his crosses have been able to connect.

Las Vegas again opened the half early with another goal in the 50th minute. Again, the buildup was nearly identical as Nate Jones played a ball down the middle to Christian Pinzon. The midfielder picked out a slashing run from Carson Locker. Ryan Spaulding and Lee Desmond were in the direct vicinity, but Locker was able to find some space and pick out a spot out of the reach of Danny Vitiello.

But Sacramento had a chance to equalize in the 55th minute when the referee awarded a penalty. Ryan Spaulding put a looping cross into the box, and in the contest for the ball, Nate Jones dragged down Cal Jennings to be given the penalty. Memo Rodriguez stepped up to take the spot kick for the Republic. But Triston Henry initially stopped him. But to the benefit of the Republic, Tyler Wolff was first to the rebound and got just enough to get it into the back of the net before the Las Vegas defense could respond.

Las Vegas nearly got the lead again in the 62nd minute. An over-the-top ball played to Oalex Anderson got the striker past the Republic backline. He played the ball back centrally to Johnny Rodriguez and his shot on target was palmed away by the right hand of Danny Vitiello.

Coach Collins made a pair of substitutions in the 68th minute. Ryan Spaulding and Cal Jennings were replaced by Freddy Kleeman and Kyle Edwards. This slid Lee Desmond over to the leftback spot.

Memo Rodriguez was searching for a brace for the second consecutive match in a row. He launched an effort in the 72nd minute from the top of the Las Vegas box, but his driven effort was caught by Triston Henry.

Coach Collins made another substitution in the 78th minute. Blake Willey stepped onto the pitch and took the spot of Pep Casas.

And for the first time in this match, Sacramento took the lead in the 82nd minute. Memo Rodriguez lofted a corner kick that went to the back post. Kyle Edwards was looming in the box, and he finished the cross with a great touch in close quarters to get past Triston Henry.

The final substitutions of the night came in the 86th minute for the Republic. Michel Benitez and Arturo Rodriguez stepped on to replace Alfredo Midence and Tyler Wolff. This saw the Republic swap into a more defensive posture with five defenders now in the backline.

For the second match in a row, the Republic spent the last couple of minutes defending a 3-2 lead. They sat deeply in their own half as the opposition was sending wave after wave of attack to search for an equalizer. Danny Vitiello was called upon twice in stoppage time to stop two point-blank chances from Manuel Arteaga and Patrick Leal.

But the Republic did enough as the fulltime whistle blew. Sacramento showed fight and determination to come back in this match against a side that was desperate for a result. Memo Rodriguez just shows no signs of stopping as he continues to add to both his goals and assists totals. And Kyle Edwards did Kyle Edwards things as he just came off the bench and scored another match-deciding goal. The Republic will look to test their form as they go back on the road and visit Tulsa. Onwards!

Coach Neill Collins on the result:

“I feel that the lads have really bought into each other, and I think they've seen the fruits of the hard work, so now when you've played 27 games, that faith, that trust, that mentality of 'we stick at the things that we need to do, we stay patient with a purpose' -they did that. And listen, we would like to win two, three-nil. We've kept a lot of clean sheets. Our goals against record's fantastic, but you also need to win games sometimes from behind. Sometimes you need to score multiple goals. We're starting to show that we can do both, which bodes really well.”

Memo Rodriguez on the team's resilience:

“It's think a credit to everybody who starts or comes off the bench. I mean, you see Kyle [Edwards] what he provides for us off the bench and then the other guys that provide the energy when guys start getting tired. It's about a collective football, right? We're a team, and we're going to need all 26, 28 guys leading into playoffs. So we have to get three points wherever we can to get a home seed in playoffs.”

Key Takeaways:

  • The month of September belongs to Memo Rodriguez. He has just been on fire lately.
  • The Republic just need to clean themselves up on the defense because two balls going down the heart of the formation should not be leading to goals.
  • We saw some tactical flexibility from Neill Collins as he has options now in how he wants to set up the backline.
