2026 Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 3, Orange County SC 2

Sacramento was looking to make another statement at home when they took on the conference leaders, Orange County SC. And what a banger of a match this was. Orange County took the lead twice in this one. But each time, Sacramento battled back before Michel Benitez converted another stoppage-time goal to grab the winner.
Orange County has raced out to an early lead in the Western Conference, sitting at 15 points after 8 games. They were tied with San Antonio prior to this match. This might be surprising if you look at their attacking numbers. Orange County was tied for 16th in the league for goals scored and were tield for 13th in shots taken. But when you factor in their defense, that's where the reason behind their performance this season so far becomes clear. Orange County is tied for the league lead in clean sheets and has allowed the fewest goals, with only 3 goals scored against them. The Republic played against Orange County four times last season, and Orange County won 3 of those contests. This includes the last match where a penalty shootout ended the Republic's campaign in last year's playoffs. Despite their success, Orange County lost their last contest, falling to El Paso 1-2 in the USL Cup.
Sacramento will look to keep their scoring momentum going as they square off against this stout Orange County defense. The last match for the Republic was a drubbing in the USL Cup, where they put four goals past the Spokane Velocity. Newcomer Tyler Wolff opened the scoring. And he was followed by a brace from Mayele Malango and another goal from Michel Benitez. We know this club can put goals on the board, but can they now find the consistency to have that attacking presence throughout the season? It is always a tough contest between these two sides, with all four matches last season being decided by one goal or less.
Coach Danny Stone brought this lineup for Orange County:

Coach Neill Collins had this selection for Sacramento:

We saw two injuries to the Republic in the last match against Spokane. Freddy Kleeman was left off the teamsheet as he would be replaced by Ryan Spaulding. Aaron Essel moved into the centerback position as Spaulding was put wide. Dominik Wanner also went off with an injury, but he was named to the bench. Pep Casas got the start in the midfield in place of Blake Willey.
You might notice a familiar name on the Orange County roster. After his 25-day contract expired with the Republic, Orange County picked up Brandon Cambridge for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Sacramento might've felt hard done by in the opening 10 minutes. In the 4th minute, Arturo Rodriguez won the ball in an advanced position and quickly played it to Mayele Malango. The winger tapped his shot into the back of the net but was called for offside. And then in the 10th minute, a penalty was awarded to Orange County, and Jack Gurr was called for handball in the box after deflecting a cross.
For the penalty, Lyam MacKinnon stepped up for Orange County, and he aimed his shot to the right. Danny Vitiello read it the whole way as he dived in the right direction and came up with a save.

But the momentum was still with Orange County as they found the opening goal in the 22nd minute. The ball fell to Stephen Kelly at the top of the Republic box, and he aimed a driven shot on target. Ethan Zubak ran across the face of goal and let the ball run through his legs as the ball got into the back of the net.

There was some discussion as to whether Zubak was in an offside position. I believe Michel Benitez and Ryan Spaulding kept Zubak in an onside position.
Sacramento was trying to find a quick response to the goal by piling on the pressure on the Orange County defense. The ball was flying around the opponent's box in the 25th minute as the wide players were sending in crosses. The ball fell to Ryan Spaulding at the top of the box as he let one fly from range. His shot was beautifully struck, but it flew off the bar and was eventually handled by Alexander Rando.
The tempo of the game slowed from the frenetic pace of the opening minutes as it approached halftime. Both teams were still looking dangerous, but there weren't any direct threats to goal.
At halftime, Sacramento was in a hole that they were trying to dig themselves out of. Sacramento looked the more dangerous side, as they had more opportunities. But Orange County had done what they needed to do and went into the break with the advantage. Sacramento couldn't connect on their crosses, failing to find their targets. They held a narrow shooting advantage at the half, taking 7 shots to Orange County's 6. But nothing was on target to test Alexander Rando.
Sacramento opened the second half again, trying to apply pressure on the Orange County defense. But they found their breakthrough in the 57th minute. Jack Gurr returned to his normal form as he sent in a cross into the Orange County box. Arturo Rodriguez was positioned in the middle and won his header to shoot it into the back of the net.

Orange County retook the lead in the 73rd minute thanks to some substitutions. Brandon Cambridge got some revenge on the Republic with an assist on this one. Cambridge sent in a cross into the Republic box as Yaniv Bazini rose above the defense to head the ball past Vitiello.

Coach Collins made a pair of substitutions in the immediate aftermath of the goal. Dominik Wanner and Kyle Edwards came onto the pitch to try to find an equalizer. They took the places of Tyler Wolff and Forster Ajago.
Another substitution was made in the 78th minute. Blake Willey stepped on to replace Ryan Spaulding. This shifted Michel Benitez, who was playing as a defensive midfielder, into the left-back spot.
Sacramento was pushing for the equalizer as Arturo Rodriguez sent in a corner kick in the 86th. Kyle Edwards was the first to the chance, and he got a bullet header onto the Orange County net. Stephen Kelly cleared the shot off the line.
And then Orange County tried to seal the match as Chris Hegardt streaked into the Republic end with the ball. He had a teammate to pass to, but decided to take the chance on his own and fired a shot that forced Danny Vitiello to parry it away.
Coach Collins made one more substitution in the 87th minute. Chibi Ukaegbu replaced Aaron Essel.
And then Sacramento again found an equalizer in the 89th minute. Arturo Rodriguez lofted a ball into the Orange County box. Lee Desmond got the initial header, but it was saved by Alex Rando. The shot was blocked by the keeper. But Kyle Edwards was first to the scene, and his shot was also saved. But again, he was first to react and forced the ball into the back of the net.

Orange County nearly found a late equalizer in stoppage time. Nico Benalcazar sent in Brandon Cambridge down the flank. A short cross was played into the Sacramento box as Yaniv Bazini got on the end of it. Danny Vitiello was up to the challenge as he blocked the shot.
And then there was one more turn in this match as a late penalty was awarded for Sacramento. Tyson Espy must have believed a whistle was blown as he picked up the ball inside his own box. As a result, Michel Benitez was again tasked with stepping up for the Republic. His initial shot was saved by Alex Rando, but the rebound fell back to him, and he calmly placed it into the back of the net as Orange County's defenders bared down on him.

Somehow, someway, Sacramento came away with all three points. What a fucking absurd ending. I mean, you have to commend the Republic players for fighting to the bitter end, and they got rewarded for their effort. It's always a tough contest between these two. Orange County allowed only three goals heading into this match, but Sacramento doubled that total after this one. When this team is rolling, they really are rolling. We start a long road trip as the Republic return to USL Cup play, traveling to Oakland. Onwards!
