2026 Match Recap: Oakland Roots SC 1, Sacramento Republic FC 3

Two Northern California rivals squared off as both Sacramento and Oakland were looking to make their way back up the Western Conference table. And it would be Sacramento to get the better of their rivals as Memo Rodriguez scored the opening goal before a brace from Kyle Edwards sealed the result.

The news coming out of Oakland in the lead-up to this match is that the Oakland Roots have defaulted on their lease agreement for the Coliseum. RootsBlog does a great breakdown on what this means for the Roots and the Soul, and you can check that out here. But for this match specifically, if the Roots did not pay their debt by July 24th, then this match would be played "in the dark." The Roots are currently searching for a new home where they can control the revenue streams, as that is much more viable for the club's viability moving forward. But on the field, the Roots came into this match on a three-game losing streak across all competitions, including being beaten on the final match day of the group stage in the USL Cup, to the group winners Spokane Velocity.

Sacramento's inconsistent run of form sees them one point behind the Roots in the Western Conference standings. And they are right on the playoff cutoff line as we hit the midway point of the season. The Republic got a microcosm of that inconsistency in their last match when they went on the road against Charleston. First, Forster Ajago scored a goal worthy of goal of the week with a bicycle kick to get past the Battery's keeper. But then a red card to Ajago and a penalty later, the Republic drew 1-1 on the road. Which itself isn't a bad result, taking a point in a rough road venue. But it felt symbolic of the Republic's season so far, as the team keeps shooting themselves in the foot and being forced to settle for these kinds of results. The team was hoping this rivalry match would help galvanize the second half of the season as they beat this Roots team earlier in the USL Cup 1-0, with Mayele Malango scoring on the night.

Only one change was made to the starting lineup for this matchup from the Republic's last match against Charleston. Forster Ajago was given a red card in that match and would be suspended for this game against Oakland. In Ajago's place would be Tyler Wolff.

The opening couple of minutes of play were filled with the two teams just feeling each other out. Both teams were split on possession as each tried to find a way past the respective defenses. It was a battle in the midfield as both teams tried to gain control of the ball. One thing to note is that Sacramento hadn't seen Oakland's first-choice lineup this season. In the cup clash in May, Coach Ryan Martin chose to rotate the side as the cup was no longer a priority for the Roots at that point.

Sacramento got the scoring opened in the 19th minute. Pep Casas found Jack Gurr going down the right flank. Gurr picked his head up to try and pick out a target for a cross. And he picked out his target beautifully as he sent a cross into the Oakland box to find the head of Memo Rodriguez. The midfielder just powered it home past Kendall McIntosh to give the Republic the lead.

And Oakland found an instant equalizer in the 20th minute. In a moment of magic, Keegan Tingey played the ball to Florian Valot at the top of the Republic's box. Valot spun on the ball and took his chances from distance. His shot curled away from an outstretched Danny Vitiello to level the match.

The Oakland press was giving Sacramento some issues as they struggled to find a way through the Roots. There were a couple of attempts at goal from Oakland that were derived from Sacramento turning the ball over in careless positions. But the Roots have yet to make them pay for those turnovers.

It was a pretty even contest as the halftime whistle blew. Both teams deserved their goals. But there were some moments where the Sacramento defense looked a bit sloppy. If the Oakland attack was more effective, this match could easily be going in favor of Oakland. It has been interesting to see the Republic operate with no outright striker. Tyler Wolff is occupying that space, but he's been blending into the crowd rather than leading the line. Sacramento needs to find a consistent way to break the Oakland press while keeping their backline solidified.

At halftime, Coach Collins made a substitution. Chibi Ukaegbu came on to replace Aaron Essel. Jared Timmer would move over to the left back spot.

Sacramento nearly caught Kendall McIntosh slipping in the 52nd minute. McIntosh came out to grab the ball, but he slipped. McIntosh got back to his feet to deflect a shot at the top of his box.

Coach Collins made a substitution in the 69th minute to try and shake up the attack. Tyler Wolff stepped off to be replaced by Kyle Edwards.

The Republic regained the lead in the 75th minute. Sacramento held a corner kick that was put into the Oakland box by Memo Rodriguez. The ball bounced to the top of the box where Blake Willey tried to score from range. His shot wasn't saved cleanly by Kendall McIntosh. Kyle Edwards was the first to pounce on the rebound and put his shot away from point blank.

In the aftermath of the goal, Coach Collins made a pair of substitutions as Danny Crisostomo and Alfredo Midence stepped in to replace Pep Casas and Mayele Malango.

Sacramento had a couple of chances to widen the lead going into the final couple of minutes. But the focus of the match was Oakland trying to find a late equalizer.

But in stoppage time, Sacramento found the dagger. Long ball over the top from Memo Rodriguez dropped to Kyle Edwards at the top of Oakland's box. Edwards brought it down to take a touch and fired his shot at the opposite lower corner as it went past Kendall McIntosh to secure all three points for the Republic.

At full time, Sacramento would be walking away with all three points. This was a performance that the Republic needed to bring some confidence back to the squad. Getting a win on the road against one of your main rivals is always good. Apart from the immediate slip-up when they gave up a goal, Sacramento only allowed one shot on target against them. Kyle Edwards was dynamite coming off the bench. But it is interesting that Coach Collins opted to put Tyler Wolff at the top of the formation to start the match. Next up, the Republic hosts Sporting Jax for the first time. Onwards!
