2026 Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 1, Lexington SC 0
Another all-important Western Conference clash for the Republic as they hosted Lexington SC. The match would be decided late as Kyle Edwards came up clutch again off the bench to score the deciding goal for the Republic.
Lexington were putting their 4-game unbeaten run on the line in this one, as their recent form has them looking up and challenging the conference leaders. Masaki Hemmi's men were one point outside of the top four as they were on the scissortails of Tulsa, challenging for a home playoff spot. Their recent run of form has seen them notch wins over Oakland, Monterey, and Phoenix. And then throw in a draw on the road against Tulsa. These two sides met early in the season, and that match ended in a goalless draw.
The big news coming from Sacramento this week was the club's latest signing. Cal Jennings joins the Indomitable Club via FC Ryukyu of Japan, where he made 13 appearances for the side. But what really is eye-catching about Jennings is the work he did prior to his Japanese stint. Jennings is a two-time USL Golden Boot runner-up and a two-time USL Player of the Year Finalist. Out of the six seasons he's played in the league, he had a double-digit goal tally in five of them, with the only exception being the abbreviated 2020 season. Jennings is also third all-time for goals scored in the regular season and will look to add to this tally now playing for the Quails. And the Republic could use that talent to score goals after going goalless this past week. Their last two matches saw them play the defending Western Conference champions, FC Tulsa, losing 0-1 on the road. And then they were tasked with playing the defending league champions, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, tying 0-0. This conference is still tight, with the Republic sitting 7th heading into this match. Hopefully, a talent like Jennings could turn more of these contests into victories, but I'll be curious to see if and when Neill Collins slots him into the lineup. The Republic are now a bit front-heavy with Forster Ajago, Kyle Edwards, Alfredo Midence, Tyler Wolff, and now Cal Jennings all competing to lead the line.
Coach Masaki Hemmi had this lineup for Lexington:

Only one change was made to the starting lineup from the team's last clash against Pittsburgh. Tyler Wolff returned to lead the line for the Republic in place of Forster Ajago. One note on the bench is that Ryan Spaulding returned to the teamsheet after going down with an injury. New signing Cal Jennings will be working his way back to match fitness, as last season with FC Ryukyu ended in June.
The opening minutes went back and forth between the two sides as both teams battled for possession. It was apparent that the way the midfield battle went would go a long way in determining the victor in this one. Sacramento was trying to build meaningful possession through the middle of the park, but Lexington's press was not giving them any space to do so.
Lexington fired a couple of warning shots within the opening 15 minutes. In the 13th minute, Marcus Epps received the ball off of a Lexington throw-in and dribbled across the face of the Republic box. His driven effort was just off-target, but it was close enough to force Danny Vitiello to dive for it. And then in the next Lexington attack, Nick Firmino got the ball in the middle of the box and took his shot, but that also went off-target.
Sacramento's first crack at goal came in the 29th minute as Memo Rodriguez floated a ball over the Lexington defense as Mayele Malango was making a backdoor run down the opposite flank. Malango lofted the ball over the keeper but couldn't maintain possession well enough to get a clean shot. The rebound fell to Jack Gurr running into the box, but his shot was deflected out for a corner kick.
Another shot came from the Republic in the 42nd minute. Jack Gurr found his way past a couple of Lexington defenders going down the right flank and put in a daisy-cutter kind of ball into the opposing box. Mayele Malango again was making a run behind the last defender and got the ball. His shot wasn't clean as it was caught by Oliver Semmle.
The match was level at the halftime break. Both teams brought the intensity as they were gunning for the three points. Lexington definitely opened the match faster, but Sacramento weathered the storm and generated some chances of their own as the game progressed. There were some spells when the passing wasn't there for the Republic as they tried to move the ball forward.
Sacramento opened the second half strong as they were piling on some pressure onto the Lexington defense. A couple of near misses for the Republic in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, but nothing to really test Semmle in net.
The Republic were still pressing to find an opener as they had Lexington pinned back in their own half. Coach Collins made a pair of substitutions in the 75th minute to try and capitalize on their position in the final stretch. Kyle Edwards and Arturo Rodriguez stepped on to replace Tyler Wolff and Blake Willey.
Coach Collins made another pair of substitutions in the 84th minute as the Republic were pushing on in the dying minutes. Ryan Spaulding and Alfredo Midence took to the field to replace Tim Liebold and Mayele Malango.
The Republic finally found their goal in the 87th minute. From the corner kick, Memo Rodriguez swung in a cross into the Lexington box. Jared Timmer rose up to the cross and got a header directed onto the Lexington goal. But Kyle Edwards would get the last touch as he secured the goal for the Republic.

Coach Collins made his final substitution as the match moved into stoppage time. Aaron Essel was called on to replace Pep Casas.
And the Republic would claim all three points as the final whistle blew. Great result for the Republic, helping propel them up the Western Conference table as they are now knocking on the door of the conference leaders. Sacramento left it late to find their goal, but the side definitely had opportunities that they couldn't capitalize on. Hopefully, a signing like Cal Jennings will convert more of those opportunities, as they are ripe for the taking. It's just that finishing touch that the Republic are missing consistently that can turn them into a real threat for the championship this season. Next up, the Republic hosts an old rival with Phoenix coming to town. Onwards!
Coach Collins on the club's performance:
As expected very good side that we were facing. And I thought our players put in a very superb performance. I thought outside the first fifteen minutes where Lexington started quite well, I thought we came onto a very good game. Created two or three fantastic opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. But then the second half, the last thirty minutes, they were tiring. We were coming on strong. But you know you're always concerned that you're not gonna get the goal. But I could see from the communication they were having, they stayed very calm, very patient. And I think they really deserved that tonight.
Kyle Edwards on his role on the team:
I think it's a great feeling coming off the bench. I always have energy. I always try to do my best to add to the boys. Sometimes a goal comes. Sometimes they don't. But when they come, they come at key moments like tonight. So, I'm very excited for that.
Key Takeaways:
- Apart from the opening phase of the match, the Republic held Lexington in check for most of the contest. They looked more in control in the second half, when they put pressure on Lexington.
- Kyle Edwards is a menace coming off the bench.
- Neill Collins is now the third-winningest manager in championship history with this victory. 115 victories to his name. Congrats coach!
