2026 Match Recap: San Antonio FC 2, Sacramento Republic FC 1

This might be a match that shapes the rest of the Western Conference as two perennial contenders squared off with Sacramento on the road against San Antonio. Forster Ajago got a consolation goal on the night, but it wasn't enough to get Sacramento out of an early hole.
San Antonio has risen to be the early leaders of the Western Conference. The attacking front of this San Antonio team is potent, as Jorge Hernandez is firmly in the Golden Boot race with 5 goals scored this season. But another name that will catch the eyes of Republic fans is Cristian Parano. After leaving the Republic this past offseason, Parano returned to San Antonio and has made his presence felt, notching 4 assists to start this season. Parano is currently one of the league leaders for assists. There are three former Republic players on this squad as well, with Mitchell Taintor, Santiago Suarez, and Emil Cuello.
Sacramento came into this match riding a 3-match winning streak across all competitions. Their last match was in the USL Cup as they notched another win against Oakland. A stunning goal from Mayele Malango was the decider in that one. But also, notably in that match, we saw three players return from injury. Jared Timmer got the start in that match, but Mark-Anthony Kaye and Danny Crisostomo came off the bench. It's good to see the Republic squad get some players back from injury. The last time these two sides met, it was a 3-1 victory for the Republic as they got a win on the road.

The starting lineup remained unchanged from the club's last match against Oakland.
I mentioned him at the start of this recap, but Cristian Parano did not make the teamsheet as he's been out with an injury for the past couple of weeks.
In the opening minutes, neither side could really get a hold of the game. Both teams were struggling to string together a series of passes. But the movement from San Antonio was looking dangerous as their players moved between the lines. They had a couple of chances in the early phases that were called offside, or Danny Vitiello intercepted the threatening ball. Mayele Malango was getting a couple of looks on the ball as he looked to capitalize on his matchup against Akeem O' Connor-Ward going down the left flank.
The first chance of the night came in the 16th minute for San Antonio. The home team was launching a counterattack with Dmitrii Erofeev. Erofeev played a through ball which Christian Sorto ran on to. His dribble took him across the top of the Republic box as he shot from distance. The shot was parried down and caught by Danny Vitiello.
Sacramento got a decent shot in the 26th minute. Tyler Wolff dribbled the ball across the San Antonio box and played it to Arturo Rodriguez in the middle. He spun on the ball and fired a quick shot that deflected first off of Joey Batrouni's hand and then off the post. Forster Ajago was crashing on the rebound, and his reaching effort was smothered by Batrrouni.
But San Antonio found the opener in the play after in the 27th minute. Joey Batrouni distributed the ball into the midfield as it bounced around for a bit. Dmitrii Erofeev picked the ball up and dribbled down the midfield of the Sacramento formation. He played the ball forward to Christian Sorto, splitting the Republic centerbacks. He spun around and rifled an effort at the opposite post that was out of the reach of a diving Danny Vitiello.

And then Dimitrii Erofeev got a stunner of his own in the 33rd minute. The Republic was trying to play off the back as a pass got away from Pep Casas. Erofeev picked the ball up off the turnover and looked towards the goal. From a distance, he put in a curling effort to the upper 90 and into the back of the net.

At halftime, the Republic found themselves in a hole. San Antonio capitalized on some lapses in the Republic's defensive half as they went into the break up 2 goals. San Antonio consistently put themselves in threatening positions by winning the ball with a high press. That would usually be Sacramento's game plan. The attack wasn't connecting for the Republic, as both Mayele Malango and Jack Gurr were trying to create chances with their crosses, but they had no impact in the first half.
Coach Collins made a pair of substitutions at halftime. Dominik Wanner and Mark-Anthony Kaye stepped onto the pitch to replace Jared Timmer and Tyler Wolff. This led Aaron Essel to move back into the defensive line to make space for Mark-Anthony Kaye in the midfield.
San Antonio looked to make another statement early in the second half. In the 46th minute, Dimitrii Erofeev got the ball in the midfield and turned towards the Republic goal. He took a couple of touches before trying his luck again from range. This time, however, the shot bounced off the crossbar, and the rebound was cleared.
Sacramento got their goal in the 55th minute. From a corner kick, the ball was played short, and a series of quick passes led to Arturo Rodriguez getting it down the right in the San Antonio half. He played a low and powerful cross towards the middle of the San Antonio box. The ball got to the far post, where Forster Ajago tapped the ball in.

Coach Collins made a substitution in the 65th minute as Kyle Edwards came on to replace Forster Ajago.
The game was getting a lot chippier in the final 15 minutes as Sacramento was trying to rally for an equalizer. There was a bit of a scuffle after a foul wasn't called quickly enough, and play went on for a bit.
Coach Collins made another substitution in the 80th minute. Ryan Spaulding took the place of Michel Benitez.
But the last-gasp efforts weren't enough, as Sacramento took the loss. San Antonio was just a frustrating team to play against, and they made Sacramento pay for their defensive errors. This is the top side in the conference for a reason, and Sacramento didn't measure up on the night. There was a lot of wasted possession. Hopefully, Sacramento learns from this one. Next up is the final match of this road swing as they go out to the desert to play Phoenix. Onwards!
Key Takeaways:
- The defense looked uncharacteristically sloppy in this one.
- Mayele Malango and Jack Gurr looked to be our primary creators in this one, but if they can't get going, who will step up?
- San Antonio's 5-back system really limited what Sacramento could do moving forward.
