Know Your Opponent: Oakland Roots SC

Know Your Opponent: Oakland Roots SC

The Republic's USL Cup campaign continues as they travel down the road to take on the Oakland Roots. The Republic will look to keep their advantage at the top of the group standings.

This is the latest chapter in the rivalry between these two clubs. And with it, there have been a good number of changes since the last time these two clubs met. Namely, on the Oakland side, new coach Ryan Martin has taken over the helm after a successful stint in Loudoun. Martin has the Roots tied for 2nd place in the Western Conference standings. Golden boot winner Peter Wilson will also look to make an impact on this match as he continues to go on a tear through this league. The Roots' last match was a 2-1 win over El Paso.

Just a brief glimpse at the group standings heading into this one. The Republic sits at the top of the group on 3 points by virtue of being the only team to win in 90 minutes after thrashing Spokane. Behind the Republic are Monterey and Boise, on 2 points each, after winning their opening matches via penalty shootouts. After that pair are the losers of those shootouts, Las Vegas and Oakland, on 1 point. And finally, Spokane on 0 points.

This match will be a battle of the wide spaces. Both teams are set up with multiple players to occupy the middle of the park, so who can take advantage of the space out wide to generate their opportunities? Oakland needs their wide players to be productive to get them results. Coach Ryan Martin has this team set up in a 4-4-2, but it's a formation that provides a lot of fluidity for the Roots as players will overlap and cover for each other moving forward. You will see players like Wolfgang Prentice making advanced runs as other players step in behind to occupy his space. Faysal Bettache will be the control tower in the middle of the park. He will be the player who sets up the person who eventually gets the assist. So, the Republic will need to shut down his passing avenues and his distribution abilities. But of course, the main person to talk about in this Oakland attack is Peter Wilson. Wilson is the reigning Golden Boot winner for the USL Championship as he capped off last year's campaign with 18 goals. And he is in the running again this year, already with 5 goals scored this regular season. This team likes to play direct, so look for them to put in crosses and find through balls to feed Wilson. Also, look out for new loanee Tucker Lepley to generate chances for himself if he can find some space, look at his goal against El Paso for an example.

The defense has been in flux for Oakland this season. In the 11 matches played across the USL regular season and the USL Cup, the Roots have featured 10 different players in their backline. Three of the four players who started the Roots' first game this season are all out with injury: Mark Fisher, Julian Bravo, and David Garcia. Bravo is reportedly on the mend and returning soon. And add another injury to Tyler Gibson, who was converted to right-back to fill in for the injuries. This leaves a lot of question marks for Ryan Martin. Keegan Tingey just returned from a pre-season injury to get his first minutes in Oakland's last match. If there is any source of defensive consistency, it will come from the pairing in front, Bobosi Byaruhanga and Tommy McCabe, who will provide cover and act as the pivot of the formation. This team is vulnerable in the wide areas to being overloaded, so the Republic will need to take advantage of that and the fact that this defense is still working out their communication as they look to build some consistency. But it's this inconsistency in the backline that has been a driving factor in Oakland only having one clean sheet on its record so far this season. And that clean sheet came against Monterey back in their season opener.

Republic's Way to Victory: Goals will be on the table in this matchup. And I think the combination play between Arturo Rodriguez, Tyler Wolff, and Jack Gurr on the right will unlock the Oakland defense. The Republic will need to establish dominance in the wide channels and push the Roots' wingbacks back into a defensive stance, so a player like Wolfgang Prentice doesn't have room to roam around. Take advantage of the space left behind if they do try to be opportunistic. If they can cut out the crossing channels, that gets rid of the main avenues for finding Peter Wilson. So, individual threats on the ball like Danny Trejo and Tucker Lepley will be forced to step up. Stay solid in the defense and always keep a body on Peter Wilson. And as always, take advantage of the opportunities you have.
