2026 USL Cup Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 4, Spokane Velocity FC 0

2026 USL Cup Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 4, Spokane Velocity FC 0

It's the start of the USL Cup as Sacramento welcomed Spokane Velocity to open the competition. And Sacramento sent a statement of intent to the rest of the teams as they put Spokane on blast. Tyler Wolff scored on his debut and was followed up by a brace from Mayele Malango. Michel Benitez scored late to put the game to bed.

In their first two campaigns in existence, it could be argued that Spokane have been pretty successful. Both times they made the final of the USL League One playoffs. But both times, they came up short. The Velocity have been a power since entering USL League One and are continuing their form into this season as they come into this match 3rd in the table. Their previous two matches Spokane have come out victorious to 3-1 scorelines against AV Alta and Richmond. If you want a more in-depth preview on this team you can check it out here.

Sacramento was looking to bounce back after a rough road trip to Brooklyn. The match saw them down for a good majority of the match until stoppage time where Michel Benitez converted a last-minute penalty. In the meantime, Sacramento announced a new addition to the roster as Tyler Wolff has been signed to a loan that will last until the end of the season. The forward from Real Salt Lake will be searching for some playing time to develop his play here in Sacramento. The club also announced that the 25-day contracts of Brandon Cambridge and Sergio Rivas have expired and the club has decided not to pick either of them up for longer-term contracts.

Coach Leigh Veidman had this roster for Spokane:

Coach Neill Collins made this selection for Sacramento:

A couple of changes were made to the lineup after the Brooklyn match. Both Jack Gurr and Tyler Wolff would be getting their first starts of the season for the Republic. And Dominik Wanner would also get the starting nod out wide after coming off the bench. Memo Rodriguez would also return to the teamsheet after being held out due to an injury he picked up in the El Farolito match.

And Sacramento got the scoring going early in the 5th minute. Off of a Spokane set piece, Sacramento broke on a counterattack. Arturo Rodriguez got on the ball and sprung a brilliant long ball to a streaking Tyler Wolff. The loanee ran past his mark and had an onrushing Sean Lewis to beat. Wolff put the ball on the far post and gave the Republic the early advantage. What a way to make your Republic debut.

Five minutes into his Sacramento Republic debut, Tyler Wolff is on the board. Really sharp work from the RSL loanee.

Both sides were trying to find the next goal in the aftermath of the opener. With Spokane looking more threatening in the attack. Danny Vitiello was called into action a couple of times to punch clear some dangerous crosses coming from the Spokane wide players like Joe Gallardo and Nil Vinyals.

Tyler Wolff was looking to make a statement in the 28th minute as Sacramento broke on another counterattack. This time Wolff was looking to set up an attacking opportunity as he received the ball and played Forster Ajago in behind the Spokane backline. Ajago only had Sean Lewis ahead of him but his shot hit the near post and went out.

Sacramento was forced into an early substitution in the 39th minute. Dominik Wanner appears to have twisted his ankle early in the match and Mayele Malango stepped in to take his place.

Spokane got a chance in the 40th minute. Moses Mensah put in a looping cross into the Republic's box that got to Shavon John-Brown at the back post. The striker took a touch and fired a shot but that was after Danny Vitiello rushed out and smothered the chance.

Sacramento was pushing to further their advantage just before halftime with a flurry of opportunities. First Arturo Rodriguez played Michel Benitez through. His shot got deflected but the ball fell into the path of Forster Ajago. Ajago took his chance but placed it over the bar.

But shortly therafter, Sacramento extended their advantage. After failing to score, Ajago notched an assist as he played Mayele Malango behind the Spokane defense. Malango streaked through onto goal and slotted his shot past Sean Lewis to double the lead for Sacramento.

At halftime, Sacramento went into the break with a two goal advantage. This is not to say that Spokane didn't look dangerous. They forced Danny Vitiello and the Republic defense into some awkward positions with their crossing ability. But what Sacramento have been able to do on the counterattack and get their strikers behind Spokane's defense was the narrative of the first half. The Republic have looked lethal when they can get their forwards running towards the Spokane goal. And they'll look to continue this pressure as they want as many goals as possible in this competition.

And just like the first half, Sacramento scored early in the second half in the 56th minute. Arturo Rodriguez went down the left flank and put a bouncing cross into the Spokane box. Forster Ajago came through and dragged all the Spokane defenders with him as the ball went past him and to Mayele Malango. Malango has time to take a touch and wind up for a shot at the near post to further Sacramento's advantage.

In the 60th minute, Coach Collins made a trio of substitutions. Memo Rodriguez, Kyle Edwards, and Ryan Spaulding all took to the pitch to replace Tyler Wolff, Forster Ajago, and Jack Gurr.

And shortly after this substitution window, Coach Collins was forced into another substitution in the 65th minute as Freddy Kleeman was forced off with an injury. Chibi Ukaegbu came on to take his place.

Sacramento added to their advantage in the 80th minute. Ryan Spaulding went 1-on-1 against his man down the left and put a cross into the Spokane box. The cross got deflected. But the ball fell to Michel Benitez making a run and he ran onto the ball and roofed his shot to make it four goals for the Republic.

And the match ended as Sacramento put this game to bed. Great start to open this match for the Republic. 3 points and 4 goals going to the tiebreaker is a great result. This might be the most dynamic we've seen the Republic attack for a good while as the interchange between Wolff, Arturo, and Gurr was fun to watch. This is the kind of performance that instills some confidence back into the team. What a debut for Tyler Wolff. Next up for the Republic is Orange County. Onwards!

Key Takeaways:

  • For a glimpse we got to see what a healthy Republic could look like this season, and then we got more injuries.
  • Tyler Wolff might be a problem for this league as he looked amazing on the ball and was present off the ball.
  • Frustrating night for Forster Ajago. Got a couple of clean chances but couldn't get one in the back of the net tonight. Keep feeding the man and he'll get one eventually.
